This may be old news to many, but first I recall seeing Clapton with a Gretsch. Took a photo from the Rocumentary "Rock Legends" Yardbirds episode, shows him with a Gretsch. Thought he was a Telecaster guy back then.

The influence of The Beatles and their guitars was immense back then.

It was a nice American guitar, very hard to get ahold of at that time in England. I'm sure he was happy to play it.

During the Cream era, he played a 335.

I had never seen pictures of him that young before. Pretty amazing how he looks a clean English fellow bound to become a nice teacher or a greedy City banker...

Thanks for posting I had no idea he'd played a Gretsch.
From what I have read elsewhere (TDPRI posts) the Yardbirds had "band equipment" that players used so it could be the band's not his. That was the case with the Fiesta Read Telecaster, which Clapton did not like.

Pre-Strat Clapton is amazing. He was a beast back then. His Strat tone is unspectacular in comparison IMHO.

As far as I know, he was terribly unhappy with this Gretsch - too many knobs and switches for him.
He was good - in my opinion - with a Tele (Yardbirds), a Les Paul (John Mayall, Cream) and ES335 , SG and Firebird (Cream). With the Strat, he became somewhat replaceable, although Blind Faith and the Howlin' Wolf sessions were really good.

What I came here to say. SG Clapton was a different world from Strat Clapton. And I play a strat a lot! I know he had the 335 and the Les Paul but I always think of the SG. The Fool or whatever it was called.

Think of the British guitar playing greats from the 60s. Eric Clapton, Peter Green, Danny Kirwin, Mick Taylor, Jimmy Page, Keith Richards, Nigel Tufnell, David St. Hubbins.

I remember when I heard of Peter Green and people were talking about Fleetwood Mac. Not that the Stevie Fleetwood was bad, but I couldn't figure out why Peter Green's Les Paul was for a "guitar hero." Then I heard Peter Green's Fleetwood and holy moly it was amazing. I play my Gretsch for blues and rock and wow is he inspiring.

The interplay between Peter and Danny is amazing on some songs, and Jeremy Spencer’s slide guitar is so good.

some people will hate me for this one: sure, he can play guitar - but i wouldn’t let him watch my kids...
