So a few months ago I was lucky enough to get a less than a year old G5420T in Orange with TV Jones Classics already fitted for a really great price on eBay..
It’s a great guitar & sounded pretty good but there was something lacking.
It played great but just didn’t sound as fantastic as I’d expected after reading about everyone raving about TV Jones pups for years.
Now I usually have all my guitar work done by my local tech who’s quite brilliant but last night I went on TV Jones website & adjusted the pick up heights & pole piece heights as recommended on the site.. I’m not confident doing stuff myself usually in fear of messing stuff up but thought if I screw it up I’ll give it to my tech!
Well I’m happy to say I must have done it all right as now it sounds like a different guitar!!!
It’s a lot brighter/glassier sounding with much more of that Gretsch chime & a lot more bite to the sound when I drive it..
    Very pleased…

Yep, Filters adjusted correctly are heavenly.

Congrats on taking the "adjustment plunge" yourself.

    Enjoy it.

It's amazing what a little tweak can do. Congrats on getting the right sound, and congrats on getting it by yourself!

Great pups but very finicky about height!
Glad to hear you got 'em sorted!

Awesome, yeah, the TV Jones height guide is like the Bible. I've found if the pickups are too low they sound dull, but if they're too high they sound harsh. The goldilocks zone is where it's at.

    Awesome!
    Nice work!
I’ve started using a 5/32” drill bit as a feeler gauge between the E strings and the bridge pickup to adjust the height, and a 7/32” for the neck pickup. It works great, and it’s easy!

Nigel, is this your first TV Jones' equipped guitar?

TV really did his homework on his re-creations. Made my 5120 into a real-live Gretsch, IMHO. Growl.....

I've got TV Jones Classics in my 6119 Tenny and they're wonderful. Could they be more wonderful with a tweak? Not sure. Now, with my 5420 I'm still playing the Blacktop Filtertrons but have thrown on some D'addario flat wounds and I'm really liking the tone. Might be a pup swap in the future to get to a more swampy Delta blues tone I'm currently in love with.

Great to hear Nigel, and I totally agree with you.
I had a similar experience with my 6120, it was always good but just didn't feel right, got the courage to start tinkering and just got better and better every adjustment.

You didn’t mention if your pots and wiring have been replaced with the pickup swap. Upgrading those components results in yet another quantum leap in tone (it did in my 5420 anyway). I now have a Supertron neck and Classic+ bridge with TVJ wiring.

Has anyone used the TV Jones guide for Gretsch HSFTs for similar results?

Yes. It'll bring out the best of what a HS can do.
