I am looking into picking up a Setzer Hot Rod, but not quite knowing the history of the differences over the years, and doing some research, I get the same amount of knowledge and confusion :p .

Is there a particular era that is considered above and beyond the rest, or are there too many variances that play to personal taste? Are the pre-FMICs OK? Are there any particular years to shy away from?

FWIW, I tend to prefer thicker and/or V-neck profiles, but I can adapt. I have a 5420T that I like the neck profile on, if that helps. I also am a fan of the two-tone 2015-2019 look.

What is the better model for you depends on your taste, only.
Be assured that the quality of these is great no matter what year.
The pre FMI Setzer models have some very different spects (pickups, pots, bracing, plywood) compared to the latter models but they are all high-quality guitars with good tone and feel.
I like the newer Setzers with the 3 - ply tops and the trestle bracing because they are a good bit less prone to feedback.

pre-FMIC, there are a few differences I think, but post-FMIC, it really does just come down to color. Yes, some are 1/4" deeper, and some have the Setzer Signature pickups instead of Classics, but really they are all great, just very slightly different.

for me best Hot Rods are definitely post 2003 with trestle bracing and TVJ Classics or Setzer sigs and flame finish if possible - not lime green or yellow :D
