I know several years ago but what specific year?
What year was the first for the 5420?
Also when did they move to the slimmer headsrock design on the 5420?

Rich is correct... The 5420 made it's debut in August of 2016 with a narrower headstock, different style fretboard, and no more "Gretschbucker" pickups.

How many “iterations” of the 5120 have there been?

I’m pretty sure the G5420 took over from the G5120 in 2013.
My first Gretsch was a 2014 5420 in Aspen Green.
They upped the specs in 2016..

Somehow 2010 stands out to me... not sure why though.

Indeed, i think Gretsch is the only mass produced guitar that will get money from me these days. Used, anything goes, but i just dont feel the gibson or fender new stuff.
I held out for something better than 5120 for a long time then finall caved and a few years after 5420s start showing up all nice an improved.
Ah well it's actually aged pretty well and has become a mish mosh tribute of my favorite Rockabilly guys, Cochran, Setzer, and Rev. Horton Heat

The end of 2012, presumably. The first G5420Ts were website listed by the beginning of 2013. I have an Aspen Green G5420T with a 2012 serial number (KS12, made in May of 2012).

I think it was early 2016 when they released the most revised G5420T, with the slimmer headstock, treble bleed, etc. I had a Fairlane too.

I bought my lefty 5420 new in November 2012 so they had to be making them at least since Fall 2012. As you can see I joined this forum on Dec 4 2012 and at time my 5420 was only a few weeks old. My 2012 5420 came stock with black top pickups. The Gretschbuckers went away with the introduction of the 5420. I think they made the headstock smaller around 2016.

I wish I still had my 5120. I sold it once I had 3 or 4 prolines, but man, I loved that guitar.

If I was gonna buy another pointy guitar it would be a Carvin (Keisel).

So....are 5120's now considered "vintage"? If so, I've got one with TV Classics :D

I got my used 2008 G5120 from Guitar Center in Sept. 2015, before deciding to buy it, I did some research. Among other things, I found out that the company was owned again by the Gretsch family and that the model 5120 was their best selling guitar ever and that production of that model stopped in 2012. The next morning I quickly went to Guitar Center and put a deposit on the guitar. I still have that guitar and became a GT member a few mos. later....

I double checked the serial number on my 5120. I had been thinking it was a 2010, but my memory failed me. It was made in August 2011 in the Korean Samick facility. I bought it new sometime later that fall off the rack from my local GC. I'd been checking them out from time to time for 5-6 years and this one just felt right, like it was the one.
I remember distinctly that it was the last year of production because the 5420s came out very soon after I bought it and I kinda wondered after the fact should I have waited. No regrets tho. I knew it was a great guitar when I pulled it off the wall and plugged it in. I have never been disappointed in its quality.
