Went to the RnR HOF Beatles Show

My son and I go to an out of town baseball game every summer. This year it was Progressive Field in Cleveland because I saw that there was going to be a Beatles show at the RnR HOF. (We also saw the Pro Football HOF and the Christmas Story House.)

Very disappointed in the Beatles show. It literally consisted of one wall with some stuff, one room with some stuff, and the video room showing parts of the recent documentary. None of it was particularly interesting or important. If you're in Cleveland, first go to the Christmas Story House - most fun tourist site we've visited in awhile, (You can touch and sit on everything in the house.) Then see the rest of the RnR HOF with a quick breeze through the Beatles part.

I am sorry Jim about the Beatles show being a disappointment.

IMHO sharing the Beatles with you children should be a memorable event for the right reasons. Last year we took my Mother and my kids to see a Beatles cover band for her 83 Birthday, she said sharing the Beatles with her son and Grandchildren was a "bucket list event". Unfortunately it was not the real Beatles, but we were blessed that they were excellent they used vintage equipment, with all the little quirks. She said that exposing the kids to great music is something that she can always support.

Not just little kids. A Beatles tribute show can impact us adults.

Like most bedroom players there comes a time when you just don't play. Gear sits in its cases. No new gear coming in. Move onto other things. That happened to me and it lasted a few years. Just would monkey around on an old beater every once in a blue moon, never really played my top gear.

But then (in 2005 or so) I went to see a Beatles trib band at a local park. They were fantastic, superb, and upon returning home I picked up my gear and played...and I haven't stopped playing since. Not only that, but that trib show made me buy tons of gear (mostly Beatles gear).

I wasn't around then, but The Beatles on "The Ed Sullivan Show" in '64 made countless people go out and buy gear and play. Well, oddly enough a Beatles tribute band did that for me!

Actually it was The Fab 4, and they were outstanding. It is the first time we saw them, and it was well worth the money.
We have also seen Toppermost and Rain, and they were excellent as well with costumes, the quirks and Gretsch and Vox instruments.

I do get frustrated when I hear adults putting down the kids because they believe that the kids hate our music. My response is always "Have you exposed them to it?

I remember being a chaperone on a Choir and Band Bus Trip to Chicago. We passed out song books of the 1960's, 70's and 80's music. And the students decided to sing Eleanor Ribgy, Lady Madonna, The Long and Winding Road, and the Tremeloes' Silence is Golden and other songs in five part harmony was something I never will forget. Good Music is timeless.

Sorry to hear the HOF show wasn't any good. Was that up on the top floor - their "special exhibit" space? Last time I was there they had a Springsteen exhibit up there, equally disappointing.

I dunno what it is, the permanent exhibit can be fairly entertaining. I've actually been there several times over the years. But those "special exhibits" tend to be kind of shoddy. Almost more of a tourist come-on than a serious show. They just slap something together and stick it up there so they have something new to advertise.

I've definitely got mixed feelings about the place. LoL!

So how was the ballgame?

it was not on the top floor, it was in the lower level with the main displays. I had expected something on the upper floors. Oh well, it was still a fun visit.

The game was good on a nice summer night. Boston won, 4-2.

I like that all the sports facilities and museums are within walking distance. We had to take Lyft to the Christmas Story house.

i heard there that a sequel is being filmed this year, with everybody as adult. Peter Billingsley is producing and starring. Don‘t expect much.

And if you were 15 not 5 playing air guitar, you would have asked your parents to buy you a real guitar.

As I said, I wasn't around then, but by all accounts, many, many young people saw The Beatles on "Ed Sullivan" and got instruments in the following days. Unfortunately for the parents of those kids, those Beatle instruments as seen on the Sullivan Show were fairly expensive.

I was very young as well, but my Mother always played Beatle records. My younger sisters were babies, but it made no difference to my Mother, ...who needed lullaby's when you had the Beatles!
My second guitar was a real Gretsch (a 1959 Country Gent with a zero fret) with a bad neck, poor wiring, and was beat to death. It didn't help that it smelled like skunky beer, but since it was used by my uncle in a polka band, it did make sense. What it lacked in condition, the cool factor and sound more than made up for that. I can say that it did help me work on my fundamentals, because it was so quirky. Any mistake would be amplified, so it got me to concentrate, and practice like crazy. At 15 when I got a used 1972 Gretsch Roc Jet, I thought that it was heaven sent.

The love of Gretsch goes back to my Grandmother and Aunt playing Gretsch banjos in the 1920's. My uncles played Gretsch guitars since the 1930's. My Father did not care for the Beatles, but when my Mother pointed out that George played a Gretsch, just like my Father's Mother, he did not have a legitimate argument.

There's already one sequel, done a few years later called "Ollie Hoppnoodle's Haven of Bliss". Ralphie's a teen and wants to buy a car, and they go on summer vacation. Hijinks ensue.
As Jean Shephard, the writer, was a good Northern Hoosier boy from near where I grew up, I've read his works with great enthusiasm.

Best Beatles clones I've seen are some of the tribute bands that really try to capture the Fab Four. Most get pretty close. They obviously don't look like the originals, but do their best, down to a left-handed bassist.

There also was a early 90s movie with Charles Grodin, Mary Steenburgen and two younger Caulkin kids as the Parkers called My Summer Story. Jean Shepherd said it was a mistake.
