This old song brings back so many happy memories for me as a young surfer.

In VW Combi Vans we'd travel up and down Australia's east coast on surfing odyssey's of adventure and discovery. The car stereo was always cranked and this song often played as we searched for secret spots on long hot summer days.

Ventura Hwy got further plays around camp fires at night behind giant white sand dunes, or perched on a headland overlooking the point. An endless view of deserted beach with no mark of human civilisation - next stop New Zealand 2000 km away over the azure blue of the South Pacific ocean.

Swap Ventura Highway for Australia's Pacific Highway and there you have the same vibe and the carefree innocence of youth. I always loved this song but was never able to find the quality harmony singers you need to do it justice. Not until recently that is, when I found 2 young brothers living locally and had to give it a try.

Sam and Jim Jeffrey vocals. Mike Dennis drums. I play guitars, bass and recording production.
There's 12 different guitar tracks on this.

I used a Godin Seagul acoustic and Gretsch G5422 plugged into my Mesa Boogie Mark V 25 and a borrowed Fender Acoustasonic 40.

Cool story, have done many of trips on the pacific highway, nothing like driving down the coast line with the luxury of just pulling up at the beach at any time you want.

I love that song, brings back kid memories. What are the Alligator Lizards doing in the air, this has always puzzled me.

Great job , always enjoy your recordings . I've seen America twice within the last 5 years . A great band with lots of great memories from the past . Lots of Gretsch guitars in their shows too . But they never mention member Dan Peek who passed away in 2011

probly loaded up with plenty of LSD psychodelics too :D
You would have had to be on their trips to understand the alligator lizards but never mattered cos there's lots of other beautiful allusions in this song that capture the vibe perfectly.

Very cool, Waxhead! I spent a lot of years in Southern California. Never surfed, but spent a lot of time on beaches, listened to Beach Boys, and became a fan of America when I first heard Horse With No Name. Ventura Highway is still my favorite America song, and you guys did a nice cover of it. :)

    Sounds good !

Love this tune also, but not because of childhood memories or anything like that,i just love the atmosphere it creates .
I don't do beaches or lazing in the sun and i've never surfed ,i can't even swim.
But when i hear this tune i want to drive down that highway.
