This may not qualify, but while he was alive, there were not a lot of people who heard of him.
As far as slide guitar, in the Blues genre, J.B. Hutto is recognized, around Chicago, but not too many other people are familiar with him. I was blessed enough to see him four times, he was amazing.
He was not inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame until after his death. Jack White's use of a Montgomery Ward Res-O-Glas Airline guitar helped give J.B. the visibility he deserved.

I saw J.B. Hutton and the Hawks at the Mariposa Folk Festival in 1970. It was an education!

Three thoughts: 1) he’s not underrated among musicians or on guitar forums, but Mike Campbell isn’t on the radar of of most folks, 2) Jesse Ed Davis, and 3) the guitarist of the criminally underrated XTC, Dave Gregory.

    Danny Kortchmar “Kooch”
Like A Rock (Seger) solo, etc.

EDIT: Rick Vito did that solo!

Danny Kortchmar played on something else that impressed me.
Those brain cells have apparently winked out now, unfortunately.

I’m gonna say CC Deville. Maybe he wasn’t in the best band to display his talent but the dude could play

David Rawlings, sort of Gillian Welch's "silent" musical partner. I think he his one of the few out there with a truly unique sound.

I'm tempted to say Gary Richrath but is he really underrated (maybe by some non guitarists)?

Ok, maybe I'm just out of the loop, but I thought J.B. Hutto was wildly popular. At least on a level with Hound Dog Taylor.

I have to add Jimmie Vaughan too. Was lucky enough to see Fabulous Thunderbirds live in the 80s and his playing was amazing. Under rated and forgotten as SVR was his brother.
