One for me is Wilco Johnson of Dr Feelgood. They were part of the pre-punk pub rock scene and continued for decades. Wilco for me has a very unique style that totally rocked. Like in this song he's not using a pick. Not complicated but dang kept the songs rocking.

I saw Dr Feelgood back home 4-5 times, unfortunately Wilco was no longer in the band, but his riffs were of course. Finns really liked them to the point where Lee Brilleaux (singer) stated that Helsinki is like his 2nd home town as he's there so frequently. Great live band always. Little anecdote: when Lee passed (days apart from Kurt Cobain), he donated in his testament the band name to the remaining members. Don't know if they did anything with it, but nice gesture.

I always liked Walter Becker from Steely Dan but I didn’t hear much about him back then.

Becker had some interesting ideas. I watched a video of him playing and was surprised to see that he played almost entirely across the neck, rarely shifting positions.

Paul Simon for me. Rightly lauded as a songwriter but his playing is never mentioned.

Ollie Halsall. For me, his guitar work in the early '70s UK band Patto has never been equalled in the rock music field. Nothing was too difficult for him to play, but he was so much more than a flash shredder - a musician of a quality rare in any field of music.

    Earl Hooker.

I hear ya' my friend. My wife doesn't rate my skills - although it may be that she actually just doesn't care and wants me to "grow up". :D

We don’t hear much about Albert Lee these days, but he’s frighteningly good at what he does. I met him once, and he’s an unassuming fellow. He definitely wold not stand out in a crowd.

The great Bernie Torme´ comes to my mind (RIP).
This man`s playing was so energetic.
There was a reason Ozzy Osbourne chose him to fill the big shoes of Randy Rhoads after his death.

Though his style was not all-too technical and vituosic I always loved his neanterthal approach.
It was the perfect match to Colin Town`s delicate keyboard-playing.
Here`s the man with Ian Gillan`s band:

I saw Leslie on tour some years back with Satriani, it was a pretty good show. At one point, Corky was bouncing drumsticks off of his cymbals and into the crowd and beaned Leslie in the back of the head with one. Pretty sure it was unplanned, I can't imagine wanting to take a drumstick to the back of the head. Anyway, he stopped the song, turned and flashed a look at Corky, said WTF???? and dropped right back into the song as if nothing had ever happened.

Another underrated guitarist might be Dot Wiggin.
