There should be some build up and organized stuff for sure. But hey, my experience says listeners LOVE drum solos. They are pretty tired of guitar solos! I'm not a very good harp player but they love that too.
Then... there's this: har har har....

Recorded drum solos, yes I would agree. It doesn't bring much energy to a recording. Live, I enjoy a good drum solo. Shouldn't all band members get to show their chops if they have em? And it can add a good bit of energy to a show. Can't speak to Santana's drummer/wife. He used to have some of the best percussionists around. I can speak to his drummer from 1969. It had every bit as much of a beginning middle and end as Santana's solo. And some pretty damn good chops for a 20 year old kid.

John Bonham - Moby Dick - from the Madison Square Gardens concert that produced the movie, The Song Remains the Same.

Neil Peart drum solo - I got to see this solo performed live in Nashville. This solo was epic! BTW, switching his grip from matched grip to traditional grip at 4:25 is amazing. It's not nearly as easy as Neil made it look.

Honestly, drummers don't get near the respect that they deserve. To be a really good drummer requires full independence of all 4 limbs. Me? I've come a long way since I started, and I've done things I never thought I'd be able to do, but full independence is still something I am striving to get to. I may run out of time before I get there, but the journey will have been worth it.

IMO solos should be purposeful and somewhat mapped out. It's when musicians start going off on their own odysseys and self-indulgence that loses the audience.

I was about to post this also - pleased to see you were already onto it. This right here is what it is all about. And it wouldn't be nearly as good without that drum solo.

In fact, if Aliens were to arrive on planet Earth and only had time to watch one music video before they left again, this would surely be the one to show them what music is all about.

Apart from the notables noted above may I suggest for a recorded drum solo ‘dragon attack’ by Riger Taylor of Queen.

It has a melody it’s short and it is a surprise from an expected guitar solo.

The best drum solo I saw live I think was carmine appice with heaven and hell.

Bob , I was there . I think it was June 17th , 1977 . It was a four hour concert . Jimmy Page , John Paul Jones , and John Bohnam all did solos

And all this talk of drum solos.

The missionary is walking with his local guides through the jungle, when in the distance, the drums start.

The missionary asks ' is this bad?'

The guide says, no, not yet.

The drums get louder and closer.

The missionary asks 'is this bad?'

    'No, not yet'

After a little while, the drums are in a frenzy

The missionary, very worried, asks' is this bad?’

    No, not yet.

    Then the drums stop.

The guide says. This is very bad.

    'Why?'

'It’s now time for the bass solo'

Rich, I knew there was a reason I liked you! I was on the wrong coast, so I only got to see the movie, years later, but even that was amazing.
