Back in the ‘70s, and into the ‘80s, it was just a used guitar with little value. Mods were not given a second thought.

Similar to today’s newer low to mid range guitars. Buyers are planning mods in their heads before they even get the guitar home. Although, today they are making guitars by the bazillions.

Those pics were after it was professionally cleaned? That fretboard looks awful in the pic showing the Demarzio bottom.
