There’s sunburst, and then there’s sunburst. Some sunbursts, I love; especially ones like this.

There are other sunbursts with much darker edges, and I don’t care for that sort of burst. This is merely a matter of aesthetic taste, and nothing more. In some cases, opaque finishes have been used to hide unattractive wood grain, but that doesn’t necessarily equate to a bad guitar.

With regard to Gretsch; sunburst doesn’t come readily to mind for Gretsch guitars from the mid ‘50s onward, with a handful of exceptions, but I’ve seen some stunningly beautiful sunburst Gretsch. A friend owns a sunburst Super Chet, which is a bit of a rarity.

Sunbursts for me are a no, that or any bursts for that matter, except when grestch does a blueburst, they are really nice.

My friend loved the big belt buckles. At least there were no cigarette burns.

Maybe. There’s something about a heavy alder body at the end of a long maple handle that makes it quite the battle axe.

That's a beauty Wyn. Do you know what vintage? Neck plate suggests an early one, mid 50s? Was the neck ever sanded down and refinished? It looks very clean compared to the body.

I used to hugely prefer burst finishes but have now, somehow, ended up with only Gold, White, Black, Cherry and Natural finish guitars!
