There’s sunburst, and then there’s sunburst. Some sunbursts, I love; especially ones like this.
There are other sunbursts with much darker edges, and I don’t care for that sort of burst. This is merely a matter of aesthetic taste, and nothing more. In some cases, opaque finishes have been used to hide unattractive wood grain, but that doesn’t necessarily equate to a bad guitar.
With regard to Gretsch; sunburst doesn’t come readily to mind for Gretsch guitars from the mid ‘50s onward, with a handful of exceptions, but I’ve seen some stunningly beautiful sunburst Gretsch. A friend owns a sunburst Super Chet, which is a bit of a rarity.
I too was never a fan of guitars with a sunburst finish......
Until I saw this beautiful 1968 Gretsch 6118 Anniversary.
This was on ebay but unfortunately I couldn't raise the funds to buy it.
But I wish I could have!
I love sunbursts. I have a sunburst G3700, G3900, & 5120. If they made it I'd have gotten a burst 5420 instead of black. There are also a lot of burst Epiphones on the premises here, along with several of my second fave, all blonde.
Sunbursts are hit or miss for me. They work fantastically on the Annies, they look lovely on Les Pauls, Strats, and Teles but when there's too much black and only a little really bright yellow in the middle it looks sorta weird to me.
