    Hey Gretsch Brethren,

I am in a position to finally get a pro line Gretsch. I don’t want to make a rash decision so thought I’d ask for input from you fine folks.

My playing tastes are in the Psychobilly, rockabilly, punk, and surf genres.

I have been eyeing everything from the limited Koa Penguin (just because it’s pretty)to the 6120 to the Falcons to the Jets. I’m a bit lost on which one would really get me there so to speak. My current Gretsch is a G5622T with TVJ classic/classic+ pups. The pup upgrade has been huge for making this guitar more of what I want but I guess I kind of hanker for a pro line still regardless.

I wish the pro line models were readily available in stores. I do have one store that carries a few from time to time but don’t have access to enough to just go demo and let my ears and hands make the decision for me.

    Any suggestions?

I have searched for threads going down this same road and couldn’t find any. Surprised at that. Am I the only one that doesn’t know which model to grab?

@Viking Power, I gave no suggestions except this... try before you buy. Like you I'm considering a Proline, and am GASing over a G6659T. But I'm not pulling the trigger until I've tried a few.

This one. 2005 G6121W, a western motif Jet with Dynasonics. Terrific and beautiful.

Agree. There's SO many versions of Prolines, and many differences in just the "feel" alone.

Try and play as many as you can.

    Hey VP,

I'm of the opinion, any genre, can be played on any Gretsch model, like so many other things, model style is personal.

I prefer the small body models...Jets! I have four.

Shown, two of my personal favorites.

Post some photos when you decide.

    Hi Jeff,

    I've had mine for years.

In the early 2000's Hofner advertised a one only limited run, came with the original style early 60's green felt lined case as well, flat back, no contour, clubby neck, vertical script logo on head stock, back painted on clear Lucite head-stock front cover.

No serial number on guitar, serial number is on hang tag.

There have been ''several limited runs'' since. Now Hofner is making a ''Cavern'' Contemporary model. Have not seen one to do a comparison.

Mine was big $$$, especially considering it was almost 20 years ago. List was over $3000.

Considering your musical tastes, you might go for a 6120RHH or 6120T Nashville - something fully hollow and orange. Or a nice Jet for the Billy Zoom approach. About the only thing I wouldn't recommend is another center-block model like you already have.

I play a lot of the same type stuff, and I've been itching for a 6118T 135th Annie in the casino gold/cherry combo. There's not one thing that guitar can do that I can't already do with my 6120-60, but I just think it's so darn pretty!

I will start by saying that you should really try and get somewhere you can lay your hands on or even used to really know what you want because it would be terrible to buy something you don't love.

Now the disclaimer is out of the way, from what you are saying I'm guessing you will be possibly playing with a bit of gain? if so then if it was me I and I had the 5622T then I would go for a duojet for something different but that's just me.

    Good luck with the hunt.

Warning, get one Proline and you'll end up with more. I have had 4 Anni's, went thru 3 - one was a limited edition, one was one of the bamboo yellow with TVJ's - the 6118t-135 is my fourth and is a keeper. Was jjust playing it today and it is wonderful with the stock filtertrons IMO. I'm trying to talk myself out of another 6120. Good luck, no really bad decision.

If you really like what you have, do you want more of the same, or something a little different? TVJ Classics are already typical proline type pickups, so why not try one with single coils? Like DynaSonics and/or P90s? I am one to talk, both of my Electromatics have the same blacktop filter’trons in them, so I should take my own advice and get another Gretsch with single coils, or just live vicariously through others.

I’d look into any of the players edition models, the upgrades are worthwhile for ease of use and make aggressive playing easier. I have a 6228 jet and would highly recommend it. I had a 6129-57 silver jet and a 53vs jet and the 6228 is my favorite, unless you really need a bigsby. I love a jet with a hardtail bridge, but that’s just me.

Go somewhere that has a large variety, play a whole bunch, and pick one. Even if it means flying and a hotel. The variety of choice will be worth the expense.
