But it all happened in a good way. First off, some time ago, a student of mine brought in a tune he wanted to learn. That's always a good sign. It happened be be "The Edge of Dawn" from the video game "Fire Emblem: Three Houses." I liked the tune so much, I just had to learn it. It took me a while. But learn it I did, arranging it as a solo guitar fingerstyle piece. This meant changing the key from the original E flat minor to something more manageable, like A minor.
That being done successfully, I polished it up and had the temerity to play it in church as prelude music at the beginning of the service. I wasn't excommunicated, nor bawled out for playing something that wasn't at all about religion. In fact one fellow came up to me and said he could have stood hearing it a few more times through. (Always leave 'em wanting more.)
But that wasn't what I wanted to talk about. I found out last Monday from a former band mate of mine that as an alumnus of Lawrence's own Alferd Packer Memorial String Band (1983-87) I had been inducted into the Kansas Music Hall of Fame in 2022. Well roll me up and call me Curly. I never thought I'd see that. Got the plaque and everything.
