I was listening to Rush today in memory of Neil Peart. Spirit of Radio evokes Simon & Garfunkel.

And the sign said, "The words of the prophets
Are written on the subway walls
    And tenement halls"
And whisper'd in the sounds of silence

    Altering the lyrics to

“For the words of the profits,
Are written on the studio wall,
    Concert hall –
    Echoes with the sounds…
    Of salesmen.”

Similarly Veruca Salt in Volcano Girls sing,

I told you about the seether before
You know the one who's neither or nor
Well here's another clue, if you please
    The seether's Louise...

This recalls Glass Onion by the Beatles

I told you about the walrus and me, man
You know we're as close as can be, man
Well here's another clue for you all
    The walrus was Paul.

Other examples you can think of?

"The King is gone but he's not forgotten.
Is this the story of Johnny Rotten?"

    ...and speaking of Neil Y:

"Well I heard ole Neil put her down...."

Bob Dylan mentions Alicia Keyes in Thunder on the Mountain.

I was thinking about Alicia Keys, couldn't keep from crying
When she was born in Hell's Kitchen, I was living down the line
I'm wondering where in the world Alicia Keys could be
I been looking for her even clear through Tennessee

Lots I like just by DBT alone. Also “Alex Chilton” by the Replacements. A few I don’t, such as Don McLean’s “American Pie” and “Van Halen” by Nerf Herders (awesome band name, though). But for Milktruck threads, I’m gonna keep going with this one:

There's a famous example in French of a song which talks about a song which talks about a song.o_O

Serge Gainsbourg has written La Chanson de Prévert, mentionning Les Feuilles Mortes written by Jacques Prévert and Joseph Kosma.
"Cette chansons, Les Feuilles Mortes, te rappellent à mon souvenir"

Les Feuilles Mortes speaks about an unnamed song which speaks of fallen leaves.
"C'est une chanson, qui nous ressemble,
Toi qui m'aimais, moi qui t'aimais."

(Iggy Pop has made a recent cover of that song).

And the first line of Gainsbourg's song is the same as the first line from Les Feuilles Mortes: "Oh je voudrais tant que tu te souviennes".

My preferred is Gainsbourg's one, I really dig the melody.

I know I should know a bunch of them, but the only one I can think of at the moment is Levitate Me by the Pixies.

    From Wikipedia

The Larry Norman - Stevie Wonder borrow is more in line with what you are looking for.

Gator Country by Molly Hatchet name checks a bunch of Southern rockers.

That song is a tribute of sorts to the earlier Charlie Daniels song that does the same thing.

That whole song is a mash note to Kim Ernst, the bass player for the Bristols.

Birdsong by the Grateful Dead. You can guess what it is about, although it is probably an allusion.
