Ok, I started that “Why I love Strat’s” thread and my 5420 clearly felt slighted.

So I gave her some attention today. That sweet V cut Bigsby I put on and that Duane arm are sure nice but I did not like how I could not rotate the arm further over the strings. I popped the arm off, put it in my soft jawed vice and the took care of that darn stop with a good file then finished up with some 600-2000 wet dry sandpaper.

    I love it....

Oh wait, did I forget to mention how much I love that guitar. I’ve owned a couple prolines, a few other Gretschs, stunning Korean ones, Chinese ones and even one from Indonesia. However, that 5420 is my absolute favorite. I have never owned a guitar with a more perfect neck carve for me.....

Looks good, the 'v' cut bigsby is my favorite, it just sets of a gretsch hollowbody in my opinion.

The mod looks great and sounds fairly simple so I'll keep it in mind when I install my DE arm.

I too love that Bigsby. Most look industrial, crude thick castings, but that one is sculpted like fine art. Flowing lines, almost feminine slimness, gorgeous.

I had one on my Tennessee Rose and I fell in love with the V cut Bigsby then. The curves and surfaces are so smooth you just want to touch them. To top it off adding the Duane arm brings that same exquisite feel to that part of the Bigsby to finish off the effect.

I grew up as a kid in my dad’s prototype machine shop business that worked in exotic metals, high grade aluminum, Titanium and Magnesium and I developed a love of smooth polished bare metals.

I worked most of my life as a machinist in job shops (NE Ohio) and share the appreciation of sculpted and polished metals.

That is one stunning fairlane blue :)
Also gonna swap out the bisgby on my 5420 for the B6C in the near future. Just wondering did you reuse the original hinch or did you fill the old holes and drilled new ones?

I did not like the looks of the original hinge so I elongated the center hole into a slot on the new Bigsby in order to get the proper height and drilled new mounting holes for the small screws. The new plate covered the old holes.

Did you replace the pickguard, or just remove "Electromatic" from it?

That is a beautiful pickguard I bought from Quickguards for my 5622. I took it off my 5620 before I sold it and put it on the 5420 I got as a surprise Christmas gift from my oldest daughter a few years ago.

    So a 5622 pickguard is a drop-in replacement for a 5420 pickguard?

mmmmm, good question. Further checking shows it was actually my 5620, then my 5420

    I changed my previous post

I have no use for a Bigsby - but that V cut looks so much nicer .

Really looks great radd! Do your pickup rings match your pick guard? Did you get them from Quickguards also? What color are they and how well do they match the binding? Thanks for the pictures and info!
