Guitar detailing.
Perhaps more enjoyable than playing?
Definitely debatable.

For me, the best my guitar(s) can look and feel is to perform a thorough cleaning, polishing and string change.

Where the action is!
Beautiful. That is very close to what I just ordered, but with a few vintage-accurate tweaks. And I asked for a lightly figured top and back. That kind of wood is beautiful, and what I'd go for if I was ordering a '59 or '60 inspired build. But I've never seen anything even close to that on a '55. But I can see why someone more adventurous and less nerdy than me would go that route.

Here's an original 1955 with light flame, iirc this belonged to Sonny West when he posted these pics on the GDP several years ago.

And of course Randy had a light flame one too.

And you smartly saved pictures, which I will be doing now. That is by far and away the most figured early 6120 I've ever seen. Not quite to the level of the CS example, but closer than I remembered it being.

Sorry folks. Not Gretsch, but my ultra heave relic CS ‘69 Stratocaster is a thing of beauty. There’s not a mark on it that wasn’t carefully planned and executed.
