I found a few things besides motorcycles and instruments and as I think about today it has a lot to do with shifting my focus. To ride on and even more off road I have to shift my focus to what I am doing the terrain the path to take etc, music os a shift to how to play what to play where do my fingers go. I painted ceramics for a bit and I could loose an entire day looking through a mad fort and scrapping and painting small detail. Literally started at 0600 once and my wife was yelling get to bed at midnight. I don’t think I even remembered to eat but it was such a nice break from the work I did at the time. I slept great! Instruments is a similar shift in focus but I can’t lose myself in it simply because I still can’t play at a level that allows that, it is still a lot of work but different enough that fifteen minutes can eliminates hours of stress! Other for me as well.

You gotta know the people that marked "Other" are only in it for the groupies, right?

@MrWookiee here's something else very important you'd forgotten: share music with friends (or with other people who might become friends).

Gathering to play and listen to each others or only listen was a major social experience before music became a mass consumption market.

My answer was the sheer joy of music but it really extends far beyond that. My love for music started really young and came from a musical household....everyone had their own type so I was exposed to a lot.....this includes Supertramp, Bat Out Of Hell on 8-track, Sinatra, and REO Speedwagon, Bluegrass, Big Band/'40s, and Broadway tunes. Me? Anything from BB KIng to Men At Work.

The guitar grabbed me though. I was mesmerized. I knew very quickly that listening wouldn't be enough and that I needed to be a part of it.

So really my reason is the combo of loving music and the need to create.

Sheer joy and stress relief. It's also just fun to improve your playing.

I seem to remember being around seven years old, and just mucking about the house.
My father kept his old nylon string guitar under his bed. Now, its one thing getting caught in his and my mom's bedroom. But damn, getting caught fooling with his guitar!

I thought for sure I was dead and done for. He looked at me and I looked at him. What are you doing?
Fearing for my life, I was frozen stiff, I mumbled, "nothing"...

Give it here and follow me. Off to the living room. I prepared myself for the inevitable whipping.
He had me sit next to him and asked, so...you want to play guitar?
That's where I learned to play my first G, D and A chords.

Although I did receive the sharp sting and indelible teaching from his belt for numerous misbehavior's.
But never for playing that old nylon string guitar.

    It’s in the blood now!
Formed & played in my first punk rock band when I was 15 years old.
Never stopped! Still playing in a dirty Rock’n’Roll band at the age of 55. Ive had highs & lows… earned money out of it & also lost money because of it..
Sacrificed a “real job” career all my life for the sake of playing in bands.. Guess I sold my soul to it!

I’m not sure. A bit of everything except the paying the bills part I suppose. The “other” part is(was really) the engineering or mechanical aspect, a compulsive drive to find out what makes guitars tick.

Enjoyment for me, even if I was getting paid to play the minute it stopped being fun would be the time I'd pull the pin.

That and at the end of the day I have to spend my money and time on something, used to be cars and guitars but family life and budget constraints has stopped the cars from being built so now it's just guitars.

Because it's as complex as engineering but with far fewer rules. Plus it sounds nice.

I don't know that "joy" is the right word, but for the purposes of the poll it'll do. "Obsession" might actually be more accurate!
