The great responses to my "blessing and a curse" thread got me thinking about a follow-up question. Let's see if I did the poll thingie correctly...

It's the best way I know how to co-exist with the world around me.

I don't play just because I want to---I play because I have to.

I don’t use it to pay the bills, and haven’t for years.

I have always wanted to emulate Chet.

The Joy of music is a big part of this.

Music is an anti-stress which counterbalances the job.

The world definitely does not need me, or my music.

The final reason is that I have to play something, and the guitar and bass are my instruments.

Yes, I love music, but also:
    - I enjoy learning, developing, getting better.
    - I have to justify my collection of beautiful instruments.

It has always been the thrill and joy of playing for me. I get excited about it now as I did 50 years ago.

Because my guitars won't play themselves.

How did I overlook that response in creating the poll? o_O It is by far the most common reply I've heard in my own musical circles. :D

    I think it's because I can't not play. If I don't play a little every day, I feel like I'm missing out.

Motorcycles and instruments. I have to do one or the other and preferably both. I am in a much better mood when I can do either of these during the day and week.

I grab an instrument (any instrument -- I have 17 of them, no wait... 18 of them, here in my music room), and I play whatever comes into my head. Sheer randomness, no particular genre, just whatever gets played is whatever gets played. It soothes the soul and keeps me out of trouble!

For no other reason than because I enjoy it.

Present tense of "why" is different than when I was a kid and asked "why."

It's now just playing stuff that's in my head, which I enjoy every day.

For me, it's the shear joy of music, as well as the stress relief. I do love playing, and at times my world can get stressful. That's when I can pick up a guitar and the world goes away for a while.

Also always been about the joy & stress relief of playing & (when it's going well) letting the emotions out in a healthy way here.

It's fulfilling to make progress technically too & on somewhat rare occasions I really like what's come out of me & the rest of those involved.

There's nothing like the connectedness of playing w/ a group of friends when you're all really clicking as well whether it be covers, originals, or improv.

Whether it was engineering/producing or playing, I found I wound up way too analytical & self critical when money or large crowds were involved to enjoy making music or even listening to it. From my limited exposure it seemed like a much tougher row to hoe than I'm wired for & losing music as an outlet & a source of joy was too high a price to pay on top of it.
