I tried to find a clip of the whole sketch but I couldn’t.
It never grew very big in Italy.
I wonder it had anything to do with the Italian rule that nobody is allowed to put fruit on their pizza, unless he or she is the bearer of the Italian war-a hero medal, for bravery.
On second thoughts, I'am sure that's how it is.
Nope... I can get w/ some non-traditional pizza-type creations (favorites so far being the mac & cheese pizza & Indian pizza w/ nan for crust, red curry for sauce, peas etc. for toppings & paneer style cheese) but pretty much any topping combo involving fruit is a non-starter for me.
Edit: One exception to the non-fruit rule is the Dutch Apple pie pizza a local wood fired place did/does, but that's squarely positioned as a dessert item & kind of just like an apple pie w/ different crust.
I've been making pizza at home using recipe for deep dish pizza I discovered in a Betty Crocker cookbook many years ago. I mix herbs into the dough and use some toppings combination of black olives, green olives, tomato paste, tomato sauce, fresh tomatoes, avocado, artichoke hearts, mozarella cheese, cream cheese, maybe some other stuff, rarely use meats, never used pineapple that I can recall. It ends up being like a thick herbed bread with all this stuff on the top with a crispy cheesy crust. But I do like Hawaiian style pizza, and also like pizza with smoked salmon which seems to be available in many places in Europe, but not here (in the US).
So, yes, I am in the YES column for pineapple on pizza!
I recall reading somewhere that we Canadians started the pineapple on pizza thing. If so, you're all welcome.
It's not an always, all the time thing but I absolutely love pineapple on pizza when it's mixed with toppings that compliment it.
The local Pizza place near me has some unusual choices:
Peking Duck pizza
Smokey Beef Brisket pizza
Vietnamese Chilli Chicken pizza
Mediterranean or Moroccan Lamb pizza
Pork Sausage with Hot Honey pizza
Smokey Pulled Jackfruit (vegan) pizza
Paneer Masala pizza
Szechuan Chilli Prawn pizza
BBQ King Mushrooms pizza
Pulled Pork and Slaw pizza
Peri Peri Chicken (Portugese) pizza
I think it was high school when I got my first Hawaiian pizza, and I've been hooked ever since. Not that I don't like other combinations, too, but the Hawaiian pizza is the default for me.
We order pineapple on my oldest daughters pizza because she is too immature to realize it is wrong.
We admit that we have failed as parents but we ridicule her to the point of tears each time...so we’re trying.
She was born in Hawaii so some people might expect that this is correct but Hawaiians know it only belongs in Canada.
A 2nd pizza atrocity (2nd to pineapple) is "deep-dish", which is some sort of meat pie having little or no relation to actual pizza.
Agreed! Deep dish is a great twist on quiche but definitely not a pizza.
I do see that Wabash responded above and it reminds me I have some serious consulting with him on Polish food.....I got a great Polish butcher down the street from me!
Deep is a proper pie. That skinny stuff is just a bastardized open face taco.
Deep dish is mostly crust, not toppings. The crust is almost like it is caramelized.
It’s delicious. They maked it right in Chicago, I’ve never had a good one yet elsewhere.
I actually like it too! I was trolling for midwesterners, but I had to toss them back, didn't catch the big @wabash slim , he's too wiley!
Proper Chicago Deep Dish is bowl like a bowl full of cheese and toppings. Amateurs just make thick crusts and call 'em deep dish. Chicago bar style is thin and cut into rectangles. There's something for everyone. Bar style is still better than the cracker with catsup pies in NY.
I would love to try slices of a bunch of those. Can you ship some to me?
OK, you'll have to reheat them in the microwave when they get there!
