I never knew the middle eastern connection but it makes total sense. And I agree, one of the most iconic riffs invented by one of the coolest cats ever.

One of the first riffs I learned to play incorrectly.

Amazing analysis. He uses enough theory to let you dig in, but keeps it simple enough for the casual player to follow along! Total pro!

AFAIK - without looking to the video - it comes from a Greek song o_O... We played it for some time in my band  :

    A+!

Here's a link to the info (my other reply went to moderation???). Origins of the song are not known, it's been played by Arabic, Greek and Jewish musicians since 1920s. Dale was influenced by Arabic version.

I first heard Misirlou on the "Surfin’ USA" album, and loved it, but apparently even the Beach Boys played it wrong, at least compared to Dick Dale:

No demonstration of Miserlou would be complete without letting Shigeo Naga and the Surf Coasters show how its done.

I always heard it was a Hungarian gypsy scale... but never cared to analyze it!

It apparently dates back to Ottoman Empire that covered Northern Africa, Middle East, Greece and all the way to Hungary. So I guess any of those can make a claim for it :D

  16. Always thought ZZ Top was either Amish or Kosher.
Although to be truly authentic, shouldn’t those be blue or sea green gruitars.
