As a Setzer,Chet aficionado I decided to give the new electro harmonic echo pedal a go. Video review to follow when it arrives later in the week!
Unfortunately I’m going to be returning the exh slap back echo. It arrived today and I’m not thrilled with it. I’ll make a video over the weekend explaining why.

Sorry to hear that echo didn’t work out for you. While I’ve never researched Chet’s gear, you likely know a big part of the Setzer sound is his RE-301 with his Gretsch. Since you need an echo, I’d suggest the Nocturne Mystery Brain. It’s got the 301 preamp built into it along with a great echo.

Or if you do find an echo pedal you like and are after Brians sound, I suggest getting either a Nocturne Dyno Brain which is the RE-301 preamp with an added bass cut knob. Or a Nocturne Atomic Brain. The Atomic Brain is the Dyno Brain with an added Abby switch. The switch makes it all a bit more touch sensitive when you play and sort of a DB booster. The newer Atomic Brains have some added toggles. The left toggle is essentially a presence cut. The right toggle is useful if you’re using a master or non master volume amp. It cuts the impedance.

Mystery Brains are a great all in one pedal. It justifiably gets a lot of love here as you’ve likely noticed. I feel a lot of players sometimes over look Tavo’s other Brain pedals or simply don’t post as much on here. A stand alone Brain offers a budget friendly option to still help you achieve that Setzer sound. It allows more board space if you have an echo you already love or are an echo junkie liking multiple echo pedals.. That’s how and why I’ve left my Atomic Brain on the board this past year. It’s followed with both an Epoch Deluxe and a Dawner Prince Boonar.

Absolutely this! I’ve had a DynoBrain, an Atomic Brain, and/or a Mystery Brain MB301 on my board for what? Seems like 10 years or so. Best pedals I’ve owned!

I appreciate the info but I’ve owned just about every delay under the sun including owning an actual re-301 for over 15 years. I currently have about 5 bbd delay pedals and was just buying this slap back because it seemed interesting. I will discuss further in the video I’ll be making over the weekend as to why this pedal did not agree with me.

I probably won't be surprised by some of Mike's review. I've been in a bit of a hunt myself for a 2nd delay/echo.....I currently own the Catalinbread Echorec and have a Keeley Halo on the way. I read a lot of feedback on the T(gear)GP forum that expressed disappointment.

I'm really enjoying my Nu X tape echo simulator, it does slapback great and much more. I'm going to buy their amp academy pedal too, it's a DI amp sim thingy.

I tried one as well and it had so much background hiss when engaged that it was unusable for me, even with the gain all the way down. It also had a lot of high end loss when on, too. I tried it all by itself to isolate it from interaction with other pedals, and even direct to an interface. I'm curious if you ran into the same thing.

I know it’s a small sized pedal but I should have known better that it’s almost Behringer price point was too good to be true. But at the same time I would expect more from a historic legacy company such as ehx that has built some of the most famous circuits of all time like the memory man!

Not sure what your price cap is, but I really love my Boss Waza DM-2. Used around $130 seems common. I would recommend a DM-3 as well but most of the reasonable priced ones are pretty rough and all the decent ones seem unreasonable priced.

This is a bummer to hear.
This pedal looked like it could be a cool one.
I’m all set with echo effects, but I kind of miss my JHS Milkman. It was redundant in my collection, but so cool.
I’d get another one if the right circumstances presented themselves.

Maybe I misread your original post as in chasing that Setzer sound more than the delay itself. Post the video whenever finished.

So as promised I made a quick demo vid of the new ehx slap back analog delay. Mistakes no charge and disclaimer that I am not a guitar YouTuber that regularly makes demo vids. Just wanted to quickly throw this up for anyone considering one of these. Sone one else might find this pedal worthy for their board, but it’s not for me. My three takeaways: not enough defined echo, very noisy and hissy when engaged, and muddies up your tone.

I was going to recommend that pedal. Never played one but if I were after a dedicated slap, it’d be near the top of the list for me.
