I just picked up a new plain top Les Paul Classic in Honeyburst finish. I can't decide whether I like it better with the pick guard on or off. Right now I am leaning towards off.

    What does everyone else think?

The second picture with the guard off doesn't show the grain that well, but you still get the idea of how the top looks from the first picture.

This model came with a pcb board and a bunch of switching options so I had all of that stuff ripped out and installed new pots, Orange Drop caps, new pickups (from JS Moore pickups), new switch, new jack, and had '50s wiring done.

Here is a picture of his it looked before doing all of that, just so that you can see the top really well before deciding whether the guard should be on or off:

You could consider a clear pickguard so the grain will be visible.

To me it looks cleaner off. Probably because I don’t like the color of the pickguard.

I usually like pickguards ON with Les Pauls, but in this case I say OFF. For some reason, this one just looks better with it off..

I voted "on" - when off it looks like something is missing to me.

Where a pick guard is fitted to my Les Pauls I’ve left them on because removing them leaves unsightly holes, but with new ones where I’ve had the choice I’ve left them off.

Although I voted to leave it on , you could always pop it on and off / allternate at your leisure . I had a black G5120 that I use to change the pick guard from clear to silver every once in a while . Silly .... but I felt like I had a new guitar every once in a while

I never understood why someone would buy a guitar with a beautiful top, either wood grain or a nice finish and cover it with a piece of plastic. Other than a tele or a Strat( Strat needs a pick guard) I take them all off and I think clear pick guards look cheap

If you had kept the silver top hats I would have said with, but with the older knobs with pointers it looks better w/out, imho.

My apologies, must be the light. It looked white to me.

Oh you aren't the only one who has thought that!

I prefer reflector knobs, but replaced the ones that came on this as the overall look of the guitar was just too light.

I voted off on this Les Paul. Really nice looking wood. I usually take pick guards off but I kept them on my Les Paul guitars for what ever reason.
