New Guy: G6659

Discussion in 'New Member Intros' started by Craig Encinitas, May 3, 2021 at 8:16 PM.

  1. Hello from Southern California.

    I'm a failed piano player, but a determined guitar player (three months in).
    I have two guitars. A Player's Stratocaster and a Gretsch G6659TG Broadkaster.

    -First dumb move, pickup a new hobby that will take all money.
    -Second dumb move, follow through with that plan...full force!
    -Third dumb move...? I still haven't purchased an amplifier. I mainly use headphones and a Line 6 Pod Go. Sometimes, I'll plug in a small JBL speaker that sits on the desk.

    My teacher suggested the Strat as a first guitar because it's the most versatile and generally is comfortable to play. But when he asked me, what do I like...and what would you like to play? I had no clue. I like everything. But I soon found out...I like any music that's played with a Gretsch guitar!

    This is seriously dangerous territory here. I bought the pricey Broadkaster to get the expensive purchase out of the way. I'd already bought and returned a G5410T. It was more of a challenge to play that big body than I realized, and I refuse to have gear just sit in the closet not getting used. So back it went, and the smaller size Player's Edition feels just right. But I admit, I play the Strat more because it's easier. I'll work into the Gretsch. I play at the end of my day when it's the worst time physically, but is the most relaxing.

    I'm mainly self-taught, so far. My "teacher" is available for lessons about once every three weeks. So YouTube and Ultimate Guitar tabs it is. My ear is good, but I need sheet music in front of me, otherwise I'll just play endless open AC/DC chords. ;)

    Yes, I got a deal...and am stoked!

    ...and I'm over two years sober. The money I spent on this artwork is a drop in the bucket compared with what I was blowing on slowly killing myself. o_O

    Thanks for reading.

    If you think guitars are an expensive hobby, stay away from boats.

    Welcome to Gretsch-Talk and congratulations on your two first dumb moves.

    Two pieces of advice:
    - try a small valve amp, 5W is more than enough if you only play at home. You'll easily get a great sound;
    - add G & F chords (for a start you may cheat on the F and only play the 4 upper strings), change the order and there you go with Proud Mary.

    Great that you have a teacher, the internet and tabs are useful, but also check out your local library for sheet music and tabs and DVDs for guitar lessons. You might be surprised what you can find. Your piano exposure will be helpful and you can build on that. Posture, how you sit or stand and hold the guitar and position your hands is important to have a teacher set you up right so you don’t add any strain and can play loosely and fluidly. That guitar is a great size for sitting or standing, but you may need a foot stool to lift your knee high enough to rest the guitar when seated. Enjoy the musical journey!
