New Amp Day

Well, what a day!

After being mostly a Fender person, I have been eyeing off Voxes over the past months to compliment my Anniversary. It gets on with my Twin Reverb real well, but just need a little more attitude for my current gig.

Up popped this today and I jumped on it. So glad I did!

It is a clone AC15 head, and the cab is loaded with a Celestion Blue. Handwired turret board construction with a Mercury transformer and similar quality components.

The chap I bought it from is a retired professor with phds in physics and electronics. Lovely people. He created an echo unit for Hank Marvin and sold a heap of them. He wanted a great amp to showcase his echo unit so whipped this up. Now retired so happy to sell it for just over half the price of what the base level vox heads sell for.

It sounds... amazing. Looks pretty nice too although tolexing is a bit amateurish, but solid. But it sounds absolutely incredible. Very happy!

And man, is it loud! I've been dithering for months thinking I really just want a AC15 but with my caveman drummer (the greatest) I'll have to go with the AC30. But this thing absolutely yelps.

It does that thing where it has a sort of natural reverb to it, although it lacks a reverb circuit. Phenomenonal amp so far.

I have a '90s AC30 and a Winfield version of the AC15, and I can tell you from experience -- an AC15 is plenty of amp for most anything shy of an arena. I adore the tones of an AC30, but it's just way too loud.

Sounds like you made a fantastic score!

My Mesa Transatlantic does convincing Vox tones but I sure would like the real thing. With 14 amps I am not sure where I would put one! The head would be prefect.
Thanks John

Also, this is first head/cab. So I find myself with a Celestion blue in a box I can use for other circumstances, too. Very handy!

Congratulations and enjoy! It looks like you found a "golden fleece". Personally it has taken me many years to learn that "big and powerful" does not mean "better". Most of the time it means "too loud" for 90% of my playing -- so I reduce the volume which results in inferior tones. It also causes more back pains......

Fenders are great but for me Vox sounds rule! Love the look of that amp. I have a variety of Vox and Handmade Voxish amps love them all!

Cool. An AC15 clone was one of the best sounding amps I've ever owned. What's the tube compliment?
Apparently it is built to vintage specs, so I think that it is 2x power tubes, 3x preamp tubes, plus a tube rectifier. I am hesitant to open it up to peek because I tend to mess things up when inquisitive!
