    NAD - easy guess :)

My long-time pal - founder and owner of our local music shop - called me on Monday : "I just entered something that will please you..." "Is it costy ?"o_O "Yes, but as it is a 2nd hand, we can discuss !" ;)

Clue 1 : an amp which is Lefty, indeed. :D

Clue 2 : I was suspicious about the tone abilities of that amp, given that his brother's tones were unconvincing, moreover given their price tag.

Clue 3 : an amp with is rather heavy versus its size and power output.

Clue 4 : an amp for the guitar below. ;)

    So what ? :)

I'll open the SUPRO 1605R and take pictures of the inside soon... ;)

It's rather an heavy amp relatively to its compact size (width = 400mm), reaching 11.6kg, while my other amps are 7.4kg (The COMET), 8.9kg (The ORIENT-EXPRESS) and 7.3kg (The VAL-KING).o_O

    Congrats!

I've wanted a 1605r for a while now but can never convince myself to drop the coin on it. Even used, they seem to hold their value.

WOW 11.6 kg for 5 watts
Supro must be taking advice from Vox on how to make the heaviest amps on the market.

I've never played one - can you please give us a desciption of its range of tones?

Yes. These amps are indeed costy , and in no way I would have bought this little SUPRO 1605R if :

    1 - I hadn't a good deal on it.
2 - It sounded like his bigger brothers, i.e. Saturn, Jupiter.

1 - The amp is 2nd hand, initially bought 1169E new in Sept. 2020. I traded out my little minty Marshall Class5 (a shame, I know...), added the amount of some amp service and repair, and finally had only to disburse 400E at my local shop, for an amp barely used and like new.

2 - When the SUPRO amps were announced in 2016 here in France, my local shop entered several ones : Two Saturn and one Jupiter, and later a Tremo-Verb.

I never tested the Tremo-Verb, but I found both the Saturn and Jupiter unconvincing :
    - dark tone, you needed to max the treble and nearly cut the bass to achieve a decent tonal balance.
    - dull and sluggish reverb : nearly always the same metallic sound, no matter which note you played.

So I was very skeptical about the tone of the 1605R, preparing for yet another disappointment, and it proved to be a good surprise instead.

    - The tonal balance is much better to my ears : think about a central, a bit midrangey tone (in a good way), where you add bass and treble as you need.

    - The reverb is good and deep, even if it's not the lush sounding of a long spring reverb of a Fender Twin, OK ?

    - You can achieve sweet vintage, expressive overdriven tones even at low loudness. I turned the knobs back and farth to see if I could find a poor sounding mode : nope. No obvious fizzy or muddy tone...

    - Sure, don't expect hi-gain, huge drive or fusion-style tones or a great sound palette from the 1605R : he can't. But the Vintage Soul/Funk/RnR/Blues tones - from subtle and smooth to solid and in-your-face - are simply there, no fuss, no hassle... That turns out well : this is exactly what I play !

The SUPRO bigger brothers of the 1605R really didn't worked for me at all, but this little one does... Again, it's a case-by-case basis !

    Thank you, Guys !

    @Waxhead : I was typing while you posted ;).

To sum up, and knowing that you have MESA amps, do not expect a real polyvalency from the 1605R : it mainly stays in the Vintage department, but in the good way.

And yes, with 11.6Kg for 5W, I'm beaten, despite I often complain myself of the weight of my amp builds...

No USB, so you can't update or reload the software. When it's outdated or gone away, you trash the amp. Period. Another disposable amp...:D

    Fortunately, no ! ;):)
