Mentioning Jeff "Skunk" Baxter in another thread got me to thinking about musicians who've achieved success in unrelated fields. Baxter is a world recognized authority on missile defense and chairs a Congressional Advisory Board about that topic.

Jason Mraz owns an organic avocado farm and supplies Chipotle with them.

Not a musician but sultry screen beauty Hedy Lamarr in the 40s invented a radio guidance system for Allied torpedoes, used by the military later. Some of her inventions anticipated Bluetooth, WiFi and other communications technology.

    Other examples?

This may be the reverse of the thread title, but comedian Steve Martin is one extra fine banjo picker.

I was listening to a science show where a nordic Jazz guitarist discovered roofs are a good place to find micro-meteorites.

That made me laugh, thinking back to the first time I saw him and he did dueling banjos with one banjo. He would play the one part, then stop and look over at nobody as if they were playing the second part. I’m not sure why it cracked me up so much.

Thanks for making me remember that.

Not sure how much he's accomplished/how "known" he is in the field since going back to it post-Queen, but I've got the impression that Brian May is a legit astrophysicist.

I didn't know that! Along the same lines: Barry "The Fish" Melton of Country Joe and the Fish, perhaps best remembered for shouting "Marijuana!" and leading the "no rain!" chant in the Woodstock movie, went on to become the chief public defender for Yolo County, California. He still practices criminal law and plays shows to this day.

Me, I practice criminal law, but I'll need to practice guitar more often before I play any shows myself. (When I gig, I'm behind the drums. Vintage Gretsch, of course.)

Speaking of people who played at Woodstock: the former members of Sha Na Na are an oddly accomplished bunch. Here are some of the careers held by ex-members of the band:
    • professor of linguistics
    • professor of religious studies
    • former manager of Green Day
    • ER physician
    • orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist on the medical staff of the U.S. national soccer teams, team physician for the Federation Women's National Team, and associate clinical professor at USC
    • Yale Law grad, vice president of production and features at Columbia Pictures, and professor at the University of Dayton
    • professor of English
    • class action litigator
    • president of Earth Sound Research, an amplifier manufacturer
On the opposite end of the spectrum: an escaped murderer once assumed the identity of former Sha Na Na guitarist Vinnie Taylor, and was caught and returned to jail when he started playing gigs under Taylor's name.

Oh, one more: the late Zal Yanovsky of the Lovin' Spoonful moved to Kingston, Ontario, and opened Chez Piggy, an award-winning restaurant that's been a beloved Kingston institution since 1979. Their sister restaurant, Pan Chancho, served me the best lamb sandwich I've ever had. I saw Zal there once, but I knew better than to ask for an autograph during the lunch rush.

Jimmy Buffet writes novels. Les Paul was a noted inventor. Frank Zappa was an activist for Czechoslovakia. Rick Nelson was an actor. There are quite a few actors and TV personalities that also play music. Einstein played violin.
