Yacht Rock, as a definition of a genre, is a weed that has far outgrown its root system. A few bands used sailboats on their album art, but the term Yacht Rock was one I never heard back in the ‘70s. Back in the day, this was called Soft Rock.

Thanks so much for the warm welcome, and I am still looking to get my Gretsch, especially now that I have found this excellent forum!
I love the "Edwina", and even thought of getting mine traded in for a "paired" Edwina microphones, but not been able to push through.

In my Top 5 of songs '65-'70, associated with my first "true loves" as a preteen! Beautiful song. I saw a video of him doing this unplugged with Glen Campbell during the early 70's, and got intensely interested in doing the "right" chords. I then wrote an entire song around it myself (I'll share it some time). Here's the video, it's the first of three in a medley he does, he/it sounds fantastic:



Trivia tidbit: David Gates attended public school with... wait for it... Leon Russell! They started their first bands together and played all over the Tulsa area before Leon moved to L.A. in 1958. Can you imagine... David Gates and Leon Russell together? Man that must have been unfreakinbelievable!

You get a nice mellow tone and the mic is set up really nice! Great job!

That was great. Old Gates really knew how to get the most out of I, IV changes. I didn‘t recall the Leon Russell connection, but it’s not surprising; both of them were well known in the community of LA studio musicians. Gates also played a Bass VI in Jack Nitzche’s “The Lonely Surfer”. I think that some of the rolling bass notes on Gates’ compositions for Bread may have had some roots in that experience, when a bass register instrument was the prominent melodic instrument.

Leon Russell is another legend that I truly love, and for Gates and Russell to be playing together, what a treat, and what a beautiful team!!! Los Angeles, at their time, is the Mecca for music and truly outstanding musicians gather and create!!!
I also love that Gates played bass, and with his musical genius, he can really make his bass playing the main event.
I love all this info I have not known before.

Not in the business, but I’ve seen David Gates name come up in many places. Back in the early ‘60s, Jack Nitzsche produced an album called The Lonely Surfer, and about half the songs featured a Bass VI playing the melody. David Gates was the player of the Bass VI. The Lonely Surfer had some fairly elaborate orchestral arrangements, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Gates was, at the very least, consulted, although Jack Nitzsche knew a thing or two about arranging, in his own right.

IMO, Gates was a smart fellow. He knew his craft, but he saved his money and became a cattle rancher. When I was in my early twenties, music was a big part of my income. While I was able to find work, I quickly realized that I didn’t care for the business. I got out of music as an income source, and found another way to earn a living, but I remained very serious about my music.

I’m fascinated by Tal Farlow, one of the greatest Jazz Guitarists, who Spent much of his life as a sign painter, in between making albums and playing concerts. Johnny Smith worked at his music store, and did flight instruction, played occasional gigs and was in Bing Crosby’s band. There’s a lot to admire in musicians that find a way to balance their lives between music, and other pursuits.
