Because humbuckers cover sonic territory that filtertrons don’t and Jets play better than modern Les Pauls, especially given Gibson quality control as of late.

I prefer this one with the thumbnails over the current model with the giant blocks.

ok Jarrod but the other side is - if you want a guitar that sounds like an LP then buy an LP, or an SG.
Used Gibsons are fine imo and much cheaper than a PE Jet.

The point of owning a Gretsch for most people is to have something different - a different tonal range and different looks. That's why most people buy a Gretsch.

So if you mod a filtertron Gretsch with Gibson style HBs you're removing part of the appeal for most people.
Therefore you have greatly reduced it's $$ value to most people imo :D

Of course that’s the other side. I’m not suggesting Gretsch start doing it. Just stating a reason someone would. For what it’s worth, it came out better than almost any Les Paul I’ve played.

The only hardline change of that nature I want Gretsch to make is to fix their bridge situation.

yeah I agree about the bridges - they should all be pinned bar bridges imo on all models.
I'd replace the mud switches with standard tone dials on all Gretsch too.

I've no doubt a mod'ed Jet with PAF style HBs would be better than an LP - lighter for starters.
The Seymour Duncan HBs in this Jet for sale are excellent HBs imo

But replacing a Jet with PAF style HBs is ruining a Jet imo and I question that Gretsch ever did this in a PE.
Most likely a dumb owner mod imo.
Cost him $300 to do it so he could lose $1000 in value at re-sale

I’d settle for “has the correct radius” and “doesn’t rattle”. Seems like such a simple problem to fix. Most of my tone switches are now coil split switches.

Oh no way that’s stock. The more I look at it, the more Frankenstein’d it looks.

The ad for that specific guitar does state that the pickups were replaced

Good bar bridges have the correct radius and don't rattle Jarrod - there's nothing to rattle :D

Actually if the owner had replaced the filtertrons back in that Jet (they were probly TV Jones) plus reversed the other silly mods he would get another $1000 for that guitar

The first thing I noticed was the headstock...just looks 'off' to me.

Jet truss rod covers are smaller. This guitar is has the bigger one they use on hollow body heads. It’s throwing the proportions off.

The Schaller strap locks also aren't stock afaik.
This guitar is not worth it's asking price imo. Add a bit of money and get a proper jet with FT pups or safe yourself some money and go for an electromatic with blacktop FT pups.

As @Waxhead said, if you want a LP style guitar buy a LP.

Bumping up an old thread because I now own the guitar in question.
The first thing I did was add a set of McNelly Sparkletrons (which I actually prefer over Tv Classics).

So what was the final consensus on the guitar?

Was it a one off weirdo for chicago music exchance?

    The link no longer works.

The guitar itself plays and sounds fantastic - it heavily chambered and with a thin 3 ply top it is very light and loud.

I'm curious what the label inside the body indicates. The headstock and the heel seem to be different from my G6228, as well as yours having thumbnail inlays.

The label serial number matches the headstock

The inside label has "dcm" after the serial number....which I think stand for dark cherry metalic.
This guitar looks like candy apple red to me.

Awesome! I think the previous owner had nodded a jet, and you've returned to closer to original with trons.

    Just a quick update
I emailed fender with some pics and got this reply

    Hello,

Thank you for your patience. I forwarded your information over, this model looks to be an early prototype of the G6228. The color varies from the current Dark Cherry Metallic and the thumbnail inlays were used so we could compare against big blocks. This is a nice catch! Hope this helps, stay safe and have a great day!

    Regards,
    Carina Mastrantonio"
