My father used to to play this song when he needed cheering up and now I do the same. Love this live version where he goes into the story. RIP.
Vaya con Dios, John.
I know him more by reputation and cover versions of his songs, but will rectify that now. RIP.
I hate pawn shops and old graveyards,
Cause they always bring me tears.
Cant forgive the way they robbed me,
Of my childhood souvenirs.
His first album grabbed me and never let go. Lifelong songs.
So sad, but yet hearing his words on his last record make me smile.
Thank you John and fare well!
when I get to heaven (2019)
When I get to heaven, I'm gonna shake God's hand
Thank him for more blessings than one man can stand
Then I'm gonna get a guitar and start a rock-n-roll band
Check into a swell hotel; ain't the afterlife grand?
And then I'm gonna get a cocktail: vodka and ginger ale
Yeah, I'm gonna smoke a cigarette that's nine miles long
I'm gonna kiss that pretty girl on the tilt-a-whirl
'Cause this old man is goin' to town
Sad. I have great memories of my brother playing the "SweetRevenge"album for me......and discovering John Prine.
I saw him as a teenager at the Ontario Place Forum. Never been moved to tears at a concert before. Haven't since. What a giant.
“A question ain’t really a question, if you know the answer, too." Thank you, John, for your wisdom.
Unfortunately I did not know who John Prine was until recently.. was enjoying a beer alone at local pub n a duet came on juke box, John Prine ... my attention turned from the “build a car show” to a song of a couples appreciation for each other... I pined over my X.
In spite of our selves.
God rest your sole Mr. John Prine
You’ll remain an inspiration
That's what's up! John Prine was too damn cool. We're all gonna miss him, weather we know it, or not.
I ran across this tribute video to John Prine. This is her description of the video:
A tribute to the great John Prine. I learned of his passing last night. I cried all day today, then wrote this. Almost made it through the take without crying! Borrowed John’s melody and a bunch of his words, like I often do. They’re embossed on all my guts. I wouldn't know what songs are without his. John, we’ll never thank you enough. #RIPJohnPrine
That's very touching. Thanks.
God Bless You John - You will be truly missed...
