Been a while since I strolled through these here parts...hope y'all are doing ok.

    Question for the Cognescenti....

On my '06 6120SSL (Orange Tiger Maple Lacquer Brian Setzer Nashville) it is adorned with silver finished tuners, Bigsby, control knobs. Can anyone identify what the finish nickel? polished aluminum? unobtanium?

    Your assistance is much appreciated.

    Keep 'em in tune boys........

Pretty certain my 09 SSL has all nickel hardware if I remember the spec list correctly.

Generally chrome is shinier, nickel a bit duller.

I've owned Gretsch's with both nickel and chrome on the same guitar.

  10. Chrome usually needs a buddy.
But it depends on the base metal.

Some finish treatments require nickel plating first.
Nickel as an element that binds with free ions (think rogue Millenium Falcons, if that’s not redundant).

It comes down to a process that binds with the core metal, before applying a finish.
Nickel as a finish may change color over time. I recommend staying up nights with a flashlight to determine if this is happening.

I’ve forgotten more than I know about materials.
Not a metallurgist, but I have binge-watched & fallen asleep to How It’s Made often. Like the commercialI could tell if your kidneys are still beating.

  11. If, when looking at parts — you do not see your own reflection, assume it is probably nickel, unless you are a vampire.

Which in turn, is owed to a nickel allergy all vampires have. A true fact.
Most stakes manufactured after the early 1900’s are thus actually nickel plated to deter such creatures.

Yep, Bigsby is just plain aluminum. For most Gretsches with silver toned hardware, it is chrome. I think some of the Setzer models were the first models on which Gretsch took the approach of using nickel hardware in place of gold, to vaguely approximate the look of old gold hardware that was worn down to its nickel undercoat. It looks less out of place on a 6120 than chrome would.

The Bigsby is polished aluminum. Everything else is chrome plated but I'm not sure of the base metal on knobs and tuners but the pickup covers are chrome plated steel.
