I Don't Need to Get Rid of Anything

I've been consumed lately by the idea that I need to get rid of a bunch of guitars I don't play. I thought I should cut down to a handful of guitars that I might play sometimes. Given how little I use them, I should own one, maybe two guitars. But I've accumulated quite a few. Most however are guitars I've put together myself or refinished or had Englishman build for me. I have only a handful that are actual commercially available models. So most would have to be sold at a loss, if at all. (Only one got any interest here, and so far no bites on Reverb.) I realized today however that I don't need to sell any. I don't need the money or the space. I certainly don't need the hassle of selling on Reverb or eBay. I've donated a few in the past, but there are surprisingly few places that take free guitars. Why not just keep them? That's what I decided to do. I like them, they bring me joy in a Marie Kondo kind of way. I have plans to create a few more, but don't expect they'll lead to any financial benefit. It's probably a relatively harmless hobby.

Anybody else satisfied with not selling anything?

I feel embarrassed that I have so many great guitars, and much more talented players don't. I have sold off all the guitars I didn't bond with but I'm still left with nearly 30 instruments. I must consider who would help my wife to sell them in the event of my sudden demise. My eldest grandson (AKA "the Shredder") could have his pick, but I think he may make a poor choice.

I am completely satisfied with not selling anything. Like you, I just don't yet have a need for money or space that outweighs the hassle. I've sold 3 pedals on this website (2 brains, and a flint) when I've seen people asking after the pedal and its convenient and easy, but that's it.

I don’t have a guitar collection like others here. I have more than I need and certainly more than my talent justifies. But sell them? That’s not going to happen. I never spent what I didn’t have on them and don’t need what I could sell them for. A comfortable retirement is good for the mind, body, and soul.

I'm okay with selling stuff, even at a bit of a loss if I have to, but I prefer to not sell anything. It all seems to work out. I have the makings of a killer music store, and that may be my semi-retirement.
I really only buy stuff if it's a good deal and almost always come up on a sale.

Well, I do have far more guitars than I will ever play -- again -- and I always seem to lose out when I sell or trade them. But, at 70, I may be seeing the onset of arthritis, though I didn't think that was possible for a guitar player. So here's my plan.

I long ago decided which of my children, and grand children, would get each of my guitars, so I have decided to give them their inheritance early. Technically ownership does not pass until I do, but I would rather see them played than taking up space and gathering dust. Of course, I will maintain a small "core" group that I continue to play as long as I can.

I'm mainly a drummer. I've had a few drum kits at a time and I've sold off all but my favorite one because they take up so much space. I have too many guitars for the space we live in and I also think of selling them but you made me realize I don't really want to either. think I would rather donate a few of them to the right players.

That's a great answer. When it's time to pare down, I think I'd prefer to donate to someone.

I'm with you. I really should sell some but I can't figure one I'd want to. I do play them all and sometimes think of one that I could sell, then play it and think 'naah, I like it'.

I’m in pretty much the same place. 13 guitars, and they all mean something to me. I do t need the money and I rotate through them on a regular basis. Sometimes I think of adding a Strat, or even a Jaguar, but I can’t imagine needing any sound I can’t get out of a Gretsch.

I’m with you, Doc. At least that’s what I tell my wife 😆
Actually, arthritis in my thumbs has eliminated any possibility of gigging so I simply play (and mod) for my own enjoyment. I was down to four guitars (G5420, Double Jet, 335 clone, and an Epi jazz box) when I recently got a case of GAS for a Tele and bought one. I’m 73 years old with failing hands; was that my last? Maybe, or maybe not… But the bills all get paid, there’s food on the table, and I still pay attention to my wife, so it’s a pretty harmless hobby.

I haven’t sold anything since 1999. 3 boats, 27 fishing outfits, 9 surfboards, 8 guitars and way too much other stuff clog my house now. My wife says I should sell something but like you I don’t want to. I like them all, just looking at them gives me pleasure and just like guitars you need a few for different uses, you’re not going to catch a marlin on a trout rod or ride big waves on 6’1”. That’s my excuse anyway. If I need money badly I’ll sell but till then I’m going to enjoy them.

I’ve got 3. The workhorse, my Phoenix which has been my main and only gigging guitar the past ten years,
The case queen, the Silver Falcon, not perfect but looks way more than the sum of its parts.
My luxury, a Lowden O32c, a guitar i can pick one note and just wallow in the sustain as it fades very slowly away.
I’ve tried selling all in moments of madness, which i am prone to.
Some itch needs a scratch.
Glad i didn’t.
At the moment i don’t need to sell, but if i had to i would.
Trying to sell my amp is hard enough though, not because i need to but because it could be used by someone who needs it.
I enjoy clearing out stuff though, i gave away a lot of pedals as i couldn’t be bothered with all the faff with wires and power supplies, don’t miss them!!
I think i want other guitars but then realise a fancy flame top is just as nice in a photo as sat in a case under the bed and way cheaper.

Saying that, Mrs Moo is having car trouble, dpf filter on the blink, could get expensive, watch the classifieds!!!!

I have three guitars, more than I need (and deserve). Selling the Epi LP is always on my mind, but somehow I never do it. I would like to get a jet styled one. In that case I might really sell the LP. I would part with the 6120 or the Falcon only if really forced to.

When I started collecting about 3 years ago, I wanted to try everything, like a box of chocolates.
I like a lot of bands and genres and flavors of music, why not sample them all? It helps that I didn't buy any expensive guitars, most (on sale) were in the $450-$1K range.

There are lots of companies that make great guitars, why not try as many as possible to see what I like most? I had to buy a real Fender (4) and a real Gibson (2) and Gretsch (4) and a Yamaha and some G&Ls (5) and a couple of Epis and Squiers that I'll be passing on. A few others too.

Gotta have a couple of Fender Player Strats, SSS and HSS, and a couple of Teles (G&L Classic and ASAT Special=Tele on steroids) and a big hollow Gretsch (G5129) and a pair of ES-335 clones (G2622 and G2622T-P90) and a real Gibson Les Paul (Tribute) and SG (Tribute Raven).

Dean Electric and Mitchell Acoustic 12-strings. Yamaha 34" bass. Love my G&L SSS Comanche S-type with Z-coil MFDs as my Strat on Steroids.
Jim Dandy as my fun knock-around acoustic.

That is about 14 and I would have a really hard time cutting any more than that but I've got a good range of sounds and styles covered. I love 'em all.
