The problems started with the name. Whether intended ironically or not, calling yourself the Best is just asking for trouble, especially when your lead singer is not at the level of the rest. I find it hard to believe they couldn’t have found a better known singer, or better yet, singers.

Secondly, with the exception of Joe Walsh - and his best known work has been as a part of the Eagles - none of them have been frontmen. Ringo is comfortable with that role but is also fine with letting others take the spotlight.

Lastly Ringo has a sense of humor and perspective that The Best don’t. Again Walsh may be an exception but his sense of humor isn’t self deprecating like Ringo’s, it’s goofy. The All Starr Band shows are fun exercises of nostalgia by talented musicians. They’re a descendant of the “package tours,” where each act played their hits. The Best seemed more cynical.
