I noticed this about a couple/few weeks ago. I've had her since late Feb. & she was built in Sept. '20. I've kept humidifier packs strategically located in the case for the last month or so. 45% in the case, avg. temp in my apt., mid 60's. Internet says dryness causes this. Not *too* concerned, just curious.

Can you actually feel the shrinkage? Or is it just the dye fading in those spots? I can see the same line in both guitars just lighter in the newer shot.

I wondered about that having not seen it originally it be those lines are fading faster or a filler of some sort was used in a lower grain spot and they tried to cover it with a dye. I can't say for sure. Just one thing to keep in mind is there is a fairly consistent amount of time needed for wood to change with humidity changes, unfinished wood, the top is finished and mostly sealed but the inside isn't. I would expect to see grain shrinkage internally first. Hopefully, one of our pro luthiers will chime in and correct me if I am wrong about it appearing first inside, and if it is grain shrinkage I would expect to feel it on the surface. I have some older instruments where this is the case.

Yeah, my thoughts are she's just getting acclimated. It's about 55% humidity today, (been ~40% lately), so, I'll leave the case open, then take a look in sunlight later.

    Hey JB,

    Nothing to do with humidity.

This is caused by the ''volatile'' solvents from the finishing materials evaporating out of the wood, allowing natural grain colors to show through. this happens more through the interior of the guitar, where the wood remains bare, and uncoated.

It looks great, better actually, the light veins in the grain match the light strips in your wooden knobs.

You will notice that the ''new smell'' won't be as strong after all the solvents from the guitar and case have evaporated.

Nothing to worry about, a further step in making your new guitar, ''one of one''.

In your early photo, you can actually see the veins in a few locations, top bout/above control knobs.

You can call your guitar ''Lightning''!

    Best,

    BIB.

Great response, tyvm. Yeah, I don't mind character lines. Probably "the" reason I chose this finish is that each is unique.

So, that "new guitar smell" is actually solvents? You just destroyed my inner child.

And, she's already chosen her name,,, "Gretschin' "...

    Gretschin...love it.

Just like a new car, the new car smell is all the solvents/glues/adhesives drying.

Once the new car smell is gone, it takes on it's natural smell...you know...hot dogs, old sneakers.

    Absolutely, and vinegar!

Your new car loves vinegar, smell lasts for weeks.

It's probably just the dye fading from the harder parts of the annual rings. The top is made of plywood, the somewhat wild structure shows that it's made of rotary cut veneer. Nothing to worry about, just like BIB said: it's adding character to Gretschin's appearance.

I'm more amazed what the lack of humidity did to the knobs :)

I’ve never seen that happen before. Given the two pictures, I prefer the character of how it’s coming through now. Looks great to me.

The only time I have seen it in person was when someone tried to dye or used a filler on a section of wood they tried to hide.
