    Hello, I hd a question bout a G6138 Bo Diddley Model.
    I can not seem to find the serial number but there is a sticker on the back of the body that says "Made in Japan" and some numbers on the back plate.
    Any idea what the deal i s?
    Sorry for the dopey question, thank you for any help.

    That is going to be preFMIC (pre2003 or so). The numbers on the backplate are the serial number

    YYM(M)138-XXX.
    YY = year, so 97 is 1997
    M= month, so 1 is January
    the 138 is the model number of the guitar (6)138
    XXX = is the production number, so 700 would be the 700th guitar produced that year.

    Welcome, I could be mistaken, but, I think the numbers on the back of the headstock, either under, or over, the "Made in Japan" are the serial numbers. Gretsch site has a decoder. ( https://www.gretschguitars.com/support/product-dating ). Usually it's year, month & sequence in production, 0001, 0002, etc. on newer models. The heavies in here will show up soon to correct me, if needed, I'm sure. :cool:

    Also, if you take off the backplate, you should see the paper Gretsch label stuck to the inside of the guitar with this same serial number.

    Thank you so much. I had wondered about that but someone else said that as not it I was confused. I took the back plate off and the serial number on the sticker is the same as on the back plate. I never even thought to look. haha!
    Sorry, I did not see any notifications that anyone had responded. Sorry. Thank you so much for all the help everyone!
