so I've had my new fairlane blue electromatic a few days now and I'm really wowed by this new generation electromatic.
Its hands down the best electromatic that I've played.
The new blacktop pickups are very true to the original Baldwin era ones.
Imo It doesn't need any upgrades to make it better or more playable.
The workmanship and finish is great.
I'm very glad I spotted this on eBay and decided to put a bid in.

I'm so happy with it that I've decided to moved all my higher end guitars up to my parents house To store them safer, which makes me feel a bit better.
So I've just got this and my collings OM at my house which I'm happy with.

Carefull, there may come a point you have become attached to your Electromatic so much, you start asking yourself why you keep those guitar stashed away...

I tried one of the earlier 5420s with the wider headstock and didn't think it was as well made as my earlier 5120. Although it had more detailing, the finish looked cheaper. This latest generation looks like an improvement.

The latest models with the slim headstock and better quality nut are certainly the best yet, but I think 5420s and 5422s reached a very high build standard around 2015, when they ditched the horrible chrome pickup rings. I cannot fault the fit & finish of my Sep-15 model. Lots of good used bargains out there now as well!

Imo the lastest models are generally the better ones from my experience.
And they can be had for same money as the older style electromatics.
This one doesn't need any mods or anything to make it play nice.

Love the colour on that model.
Smaller headstock, without Electromatic on it, looks really cool.

    Very good choice, sir.

Yep, I like the Blacktops, too. Got two of the special FSR 5420T's with TVJ Classics and one with the Blacktops.
Not a whole lot of difference when played back-to-back; for me, Blacktops are as good when gigging.
But........it's very satisfying to see the TVJ name stamped on the pickups.
So - I will keep them all!
