I was over at a flying friends house. He has played in a band off and on for over forty years. He has 2 Country Gents, a White Falcon and a 4th I didn't see. Plays them through a Twin Reverb and has never played a Fender guitar.

Also, he has never heard of Brian Setzer (I know, I know). He said they played a lot of Oak Ridge Boys stuff and he just liked the way the Gretsch Gent played and never saw a reason to go looking at other brands.

That's OK. Most people have never heard of Tommy Tedesco either.

But I doubt if there's a person in the entire USA over the age of 30 that hasn't heard him play on at least one song in their lifetime.

Perhaps it is time to introduce him to the variety of musicians and their Gretsch's that are roaming the world

He would make my list of highly influential musicians that many people have never heard of, which also includes Leonard Cohen, Bo Diddley, David Allan Coe....

Fascinating and almost something to be a little envious of...a lot of us are obsessed with guitar heroes and their equipment. Seems a little refreshing to hear about a guy that just likes the guitar and how it sounds regardless of any intangible mojo it has.

I’m a Gretsch guy and I’m not really a Setzer fan.
Obviously, he’s an amazing player with enviable tone, but he’s not my guy.

(I’m now ducking for cover :))

LoL, my experience is that many adults listen to what they've always listened to and aren't much interested in, and often put down, anything new or different. We have our existing neural pathways, and we like 'em that way!

    Lol. I'll duck with you.

Nothing but respect for him and his abilities.

Harrison got my attention, and he was playing a Gretsch.

Stills and Young poisened my mind to another level of Gretsch sanity.

My thing is that nothing he does speaks to me or my life.
I’ve never heard a Setzer tune and thought “Hey, that hits home!”
    It’s good-timey happy songs.
I get the appeal, but it’s not sleazy enough for me.

    Just one man’s opinion.

However, I appreciate the fact that some people here LOVE him, and I don’t want to be one of those guys that talks trash about something/someone that other members adore.
Also, If someone didn’t love him to the extreme, we wouldn’t have Tavo’s Nocturne Brain preamp pedals, which can do just as much for a non-Setzer fan as for a devotee.

Well said. What bugs me a the most about Setzer and the Stray Cats is the good-timey-happy-nostalgia factor... the song lyrics are all about how great and wholesome the 50s were, which unintentionally permanently grounded the rockabilly genre as 50s revival.

I'd never heard of him until I joined Gretsch-Talk. Can't say I'm a fan of his either.

David Allan Coe has pretty much guaranteed that he'd never get any airplay. The three you named run in totally different genres.
The guy plays Statler Bros. tunes. That's a long way from Stray Cats. I don't put anything down, for the most part. Everybody likes something different. That's why we have variety. I'm not a fan of rap, K-Pop, or hip-hop. I understand why folks enjoy it, tho.

"That ain't no Hank Williams tune!"---Bob, at the Country Bunker
"I may not know art, but I know what I like!"---John Cleese as the Pope, on Monty Python

Make room for one more. I bought the Cats early stuff but I got tired of it. Time to listen to other things, I guess.
