I'm back in the Gretsch fold since picking up a sunburst 2420 on Craigslist last week at a very nice price. Pretty blown away by the playability and acoustic tone but the pickups had more of a PAF thing than I like. Was thinking about replacements but thought I'd try removing half the screws instead, making the pickups essentially hum-cancelling single coils. The remaining screws were raised up a bit and staggered for balance. This worked out incredibly well- improved clarity while still sounding nice and fat.
    These pickups aren't going anywhere!

Very cool! Did you lose a significant amount of gain, if any?

    No, maybe 20% less output.

Interesting. Looks like a wide range humbucker.

I did this mod last year on a Squier '72 Thinline with WR humbuckers (unscrewed the hidden poles from the back of the pickups). It worked pretty well there, but it's perfect with the Broad'trons.

Streamliners so hot right now! Lol

I have my lasers set on a Brooklyn burst 2420 for no good reason other than they are great playin, great sounding guitars that can’t stay this cheap forever. I have other plans for the pickups though, but thanks for the tip :)

Sorry to drag up an old thread.. but I came across this yesterday when searching for how people are setting the height of their Broad'trons. I tried it this morning on my new G2622T and it certainly removes the PAF style woody-muddy tone and allows the neck pickup to breathe. I quite like the bridge pickup as it is, so I'm leaving that alone. I wanted to stop stuff getting inside the holes, and also preserve the wax should I want to put the poles back in.. so I carefully scored around some electrical tape to cover the holes. Worked quite well, and from a short distance you can't tell. Cheers to the OP for the mod 20190329_090805.jpg !

Hi, I'm new here. I own a beautiful black 2622 for some weeks, my first semi-hollow (an addition to Ibanez RG, Tele and the electric-accoustic guitar) and I almost ;) love it. Two things that I don't like are: the heavy neck that likes to go down while not held, and the bit-too-dark/mellow sound for the post-punk/coldwave music I'm playing.

So I went across this thread and I found the proposed solution very tempting*. Please don't laugh at me, as I've never done it before, but is this humbucker mod revertable? I mean - will I be able to put the screws back on their places and come back to the original sound without any deeper ingerence in the pickups in case if I don't like the new sound?

    Thanks a lot in advance!

*I'd like to try it with the bridge pickup.

    Welcome to Gretschtalk.

Maybe counter the neck dive with a wide bass strap?
and yes, the mod is reversible.

Yup, I was thinking about it, going to buy one soon, I believe it should work.

    PERFECT, thank you! :)

Well, I did it just a moment ago and I'm very pleased with the results. I'd say it's a Gretsch-o-caster ;) now in the bridge position, while keeping the original sound of the unmodified neck pickup. And I think that the black tape will do the aesthetics job.

Thank you for this tip, that was pefectly what I was looking for!

And regarding the heavy neck, I've just ordered the hemp strap, I've heard that it should keep the guitar perfectly stable.

Just did the mod myself on the neck, definitely brightens it up.

Does anyone know what size the screws are/how I can find out? Thinking of buying some black plastic replacements to plug the holes.

mikep, I have the StewMac Thread Detective (and my Broad'Trons) at home and will take a measurement for you in a few hours. If my dementia takes over before I get home, feel free to nag me for an answer.

TNO1, as the prostitute said to the leper, "Thanks for the tip!"
