Dr. Petty sounds like the villain in a Nickelodeon show. He doesn't seem like the type of person who would insist on people calling him Dr. Petty so that's a plus. If someone tells me they're a Dr. I always hope I'm meeting the kind who could patch me up if I get sick somehow.

    Yes I wonder too.
What does that mean to grant it posthumous? Did he study there, at least? Is that a mark of honour to former students? Are there any others?

They might have renamed the university, would become TPUF...

I live with my oldest daughter, a physician. She says for the most part the only people that introduce themselves as “Doctor” are academic PhD’s.

Posthumus awards are meant for the families of the honored. I doubt if the recipient really cares.

Posthumous means "after death." He worked there in maintenance, didn't attend the school but is from Gainesville, where the school is located. The crowd sings along to the song now at football games.

Do you mean in a social setting? I still call my physician doctor. I've been tempted to insist on anyone asking me ti use doctor to call me doctor too (juris doctor).

Yup, social setting or semi professional setting like when individuals would come to my office with an issue not related to their profession.

    I like your comment.

As a JD you could insist on "Esquire". :D

My sister is a professor. I was visiting her awhile ago and someone called out, "Dr. Welters!" I wondered briefly if someone knew me in Rhode Island, but realized they were referring to her.

My wife is an MD. I keep reminding her that my JD degree means that I'm a real doctor too, and she keeps reminding me that it really, really doesn't. :D

My wife is a DNP (Doctor of Nursing Practice).
Few people are actually aware this even exists.
    She's literally a Dr. Nurse! :)

And no, she nor anyone else calls her 'Doctor'.

"Esquire" used to mean that you were a land owner.
