Trash Kidd started a thread saying how amazed he was at winning a Gretsch guitar because - as he put it -

    "I never win anything!"

This is an oft heard saying when we are confronted with people who actually HAVE won something and I was wondering how many others there are out there who have had amazing luck like Nigel.

    To start the ball rolling.
I never win anything either but when I was technician apprentice with Marconi learning electrical engineering in the late 60s I bought 3 tickets for the Marconi Social club Christmas raffle.

Blow me if for my one shilling outlay I didn't go and win the 3rd prize!
200 Cigarettes, a bottle of whiskey, a bottle of sherry a 28 lb fresh turkey, 5 cigars and a box of mince pies!
For a very young man living close to the student-poverty-line this made for a very merry Christmas indeed and although the turkey was an 'interference fit' in the oven this did not detract from our enjoyment.

So what yous ever won guys?

In the 3rd grade (many years ago) I won a spelling bee and won a Peter Pan Captain Hook Coloring book. About an inch thick and full of other colored pictures and literature from the Disney film. Really made my day back then ! I
would rather Win A Gretsch Guitar though !!!

I won a silver dollar in 5th grade for my "Why Wear A Poppy" essay.
I won a three foot tall chocolate Easter Bunny in the Kist Easter draw.
It was almost as tall as me at the time.
Some door prizes at various events.
Couldn't call myself Canadian if I didn't mention free coffee and donuts in Roll up the Rim.

Well it's no wonder YOU didn't win the Gretsch - you've won more prizes than we can shake a stick at! You have to give other people a chance you know!

Speaking of draws here's one some of you might be interested in. There's a draw for a Fishman loudbox artist and one year subscription at Peghead Nation. Don't know if you need a Facebook account or not though.

I grew up in small town Canada (pop 2500). I won several track and field events in my high school years. I may still hold 2 records. But it doesn't take long to be humbled by someone with extraordinary more ability who has worked long and hard to get there.

The real distinction is if you won something by skill or by luck.
    I won $50 in the lottery---more than I ever put into it----Luck.
Won a Risk tournament, and a few euchre tournaments---Skill.
Held course record at Putt-Putt for a couple of years---skill.

After Nam, I got stationed in England for 18 months. Sheer luck.

I won a free tattoo one night at a bar raffle. Thought about it for about 24 hours and couldn't think of anything that I wanted to stare at on myself for the rest of my life so I gave it to a girlfriend.

Never anything myself that I can think of, but my wife won a computer once, I believe it was a radio station, fifth caller type of thing.

Beyond good luck. The Fairy Godmother smiled upon me. I was there in '71-'72. 70miles NNE of London near Cambridge. Name a band---saw 'em. Even with lowly Sgt.'s pay I had plenty of money. Saw tons of cool things, climbed over castles and cathedrals, met lotsa great people, saw the Queen, and got to go to the continent on leave. One of the high points of my life.

I actually won a really nice Strat on a Strat-Talk giveaway years ago!

Also, it wasn't a giveaway......I guess I had to "earn" it, but I won my way to the Grand Finals(and a BOATLOAD of gear along the way!)in LA for the Guitar Center "King Of The Blues" Competition. THAT was a totally incredible experience. It went from like 25,000 guitar players down to the Top 6 at Grand Finals. Huge honor, great time!

Hard to believe now but I've won a few lady's hearts over the years.

Other than that I buy some tickets for charity raffles.. never won a sausage.

I saw a bumper sticker years ago and it has stuck with me: "The lottery is a tax on people who are bad at math".

I have come up empty on guitar related sweepstakes, but I've won a couple of door prizes through the years at the company Christmas party...hard to believe, but that is it with my luck! I will say my wife is a heck of a prize too!

Lots of times. The only Guitar competition was 1969 Walnut Valley competition. You can Google it and still enter. Roy Clark came in first, I got third. Still a win is a win.
