I know Dave Simpson isn't the end all of guitar gear reviewers and it comes down to personal taste BUT he has a good channel and info on guitar gear so maybe it is worth a watch to see his take on these things.

If you don't know who Dave Simpson is he is a guitar enthusiast who plays well and has lots of gear and a good following on YouTube -

I'm a big fan of Dave. He reminds me of a guy right out of 1969, like he should be in something like Jethro Tull or Gong. He's an oddball in that he only likes solid state amps. His main amp is a Marshall MG100, which he uses as a pedal platform. He's an Orange endorsee but he's all Crush, no Rockerverb. He reviews a lot of cheap guitars that he buys used. He's such a great musician that he makes anything sound amazing. Of all the YouTube guitar guys he's one of the most original, and is a true artist.

He sure makes solid state amps sound great. I have an Orange solid state CR60. I like it a lot.

I'm skeptical about NUX pedals. I played the Steel Singer pedal and it sounded decent. Compared to the J. Rockett Lenny and Vertex Steel String MKII, I thought the NUX offering was a cheap knock-off. I used the same amp for all 3......4 actually as I also tried the Vertex SSS which I ended up buying.

Some youtube comparisons I watched after the purchase talked about NUX being cheap knock-offs.......especially from Vertex.

I should give some of their other offerings a try though and not judge just by one model they make.

I got the NUX Optima Air last year for a special project and it worked really well. I was able to use some of the built-in acoustic guitar IR's and download some free/paid acoustic instrument IRs and load them and set up some useful presets with their downloadable software on my Mac. That was what made the pedal really useful, being able to test some things out with the pedal manually, then hook it up to the computer to set up a bunch of presets. There was not a lot of documentation or really useful videos on what I needed to do, but once I started using it, I figured it out.

They started out as just another far east knock off company, but the last 2-3 years I’ve observed some effort to put their own spin on things.

I first found Dave Simpson demoing vintage gear from a UK shop called Old Hat Guitars. They have a massive collection of vintage gear in their shop in Horncastle, but never seem to promote it. Dave seemed to be working hard on YouTube to spread the word, but something seemed to go wrong. But he continued with his own reviews and has done great. You can sense his genuine enthusiasm for playing and instruments

I've owned a few. Their original take on the Space Echo (I forget what it was called) was ok. The Roctary (rotary octave) is quite good, up there with the Strymon Lex (which I have also owned), and has the octave feature which makes it sound like an organ... I use this to great effect in my cover band when I need a synth run here or there (I do the keyboard lick in Prince's "Let's Go Crazy", and it nails it).

I also have the Nux Damp reverb, which looks cheap, but sounds expensive. Another winner.

Doesn't mean I'll be buying Nux instead of other brands from now on, but they make good stuff. Apparently a couple of their designers (founders maybe?) actually came from Strymon, so there you go...

haha this is timely... this just popped up in my daily morning forum review... I just ordered it. I currently have 2 pedals on my cover band board for various levels of drive, it would be nice to save a little space and one power plug...

NUX is like everyone else, really - they mostly ape known circuits, sometimes make a small change or two, and sell as a lower-priced alternative. It is a well-tread path at this point. Some might argue that it is uncool and a slight of intellectual property, but they are catering to a different demographic than the boutique builders anyway so no harm done usually. Just listen to Josh from JHS about Behringer pedals, though he is admittedly an unusually honest guy.

JHS - What's the deal with Behringer pedals?

I have their MIAB called Plexi Cruncher or something like that, it's a great pedal imo, I actually use it into my Marshall's sometimes to get that dirt. The Nu X stuff is definitely a cut above Beringer pedals, mine was used for around 30 bux so they're in the same price range but are much more solid and durable, I had a Beringer and it felt like a plastic toy, sounded cool though, kinda like those mini Danelectro pedals.
