The following is current, I just don't know what the letters GP etc mean. Also, France lost today yet they are to play in the sweet sixteen?? Does that mean thaat even with the loss, they are still 1st or second in their group?

As you may have guessed, it's Greek to me.

France was already through, so I'm not sure they pushed very hard.

Anyhoo, Games Played, Wins, Draws, Losses, ends with Goal Defecit and Points. Not sure about F and A. Perhaps F for fouls(yellow cards)?

You a follower of the Footy? :)

F and A are ‘goals For’ and ‘goals Against’. Yep France won their first 2 games so with 6 points prior to todays game they were already guaranteed a place in the top 2 of their pool (and now Australia is 2nd and going through too!!!!! 🤩)

Awesome, more experience for Kuol (might give away which professional team I follow, since we also have English, Brazilian, and maybe even a Swiss player still in.)

Thanks - Don't know much at all about it. My niece played in high school so I went. If both USA and Australia make the elite 8 I win another $50. (a guy I fly with is from England so I took Australia.) :)

I don't think they use sweet 16 etc basketball terms but what the hey

But Greece isn't even included in the top 4.

USA are a genuine chance against the Dutch, USA were damn unlucky not to have beaten England in their pool match. Australia on the other hand are playing Argentina to advance. It’s like Finland taking on the USA in basketball..

Positing 2 teams who have identical win points & goal differentials.

Cleanest team (fouls/cards) finishes ahead of one who played a chippier game.

At some point the scoring is a bit ridiculous.
For example, the US women’s team beating up on Thailand a few years ago—to the tune of 13 goals in one game. At least the World Cup doesn’t come down to best-of-5 shootouts.

All games have their own incomprehensible rules.
I think it should come down to best team haircut.

It's safe to say I won't make a living hadicapping soccer. Seven of my 8 picks lost while I did pick England to advance. The penalty shootout to break a tie is more exciting than the game itself. :)

If you believe that any team other than the following four will play in the semifinals, then consider making a bet at your local bookmakers. Perhaps the only one that won't have decent odds will be England--like Tottenham Hotspur, they are either an amazing team or they stink rotten. There is no in between. We've already seen both versions of England in this World Cup.

Argentina/ Brazil

France/Portugal

Brazil also have Pele's karma behind them. Pele is in my opinion the paradigm of gentleman sportsman and roll model. I am beside myself with the news reports of his health, even though at least conflicting. I got into football/soccer in the late 1970s because of Pele. I became a FIFA licensed referee in 1985 at age 18 because of Pele (not the norm for a kid in Detroit at the time). I take comfort with Pele highlights in times of trouble to this day. With such a legacy I am saddened how the Brazil team of today in my opinion can act akin to the showboaters in the NBA. I wish they would carry on Pele's leading example of what professional sports conduct means.
