It sounds like your nut slots may not be deep enough - the strings at that end of the neck are likely so high that fretting pulls them sharp; I had a similar problem with my Double Jet. This condition is fairly easy to correct, but you may wish to consult a luthier if you’re not confident about doing the job yourself (or if you lack the proper tools).Hi thank you all for sincere and warm welcome already got my slippers on with a JD , but maybe I’m early with this ,a problem with my new Gretsch that I never had with my accoustic is that the first four frets tuning seems to be a tad sharp wel not a tad on the 6th string a lot sharp , any ideas what going on here my first reaction is that the neck needs filing down ,I have not done a set up yet or changed the strings Ill wait to when they arrive just a tad concerned maybe it’s an electric Gretsch thing
dunno.cheers
Eh up Buggerlugs how is thee?
Great name by the way! My dad always called me that!
Electric guitars work best with a light touch, you can't mash the strings down hard; heavier gauge strings may help you transition to electric. Try an 0.011 or 0.012 set. Ernie Ball makes 011-048 sets and some 0.012-.056 sets, too. However, a 056 string will likely require the nut be modified. You can also try a capo on fret 1 and see if your problem still occurs--if so then nut height is not your problem, but likely finger pressure.Hi thank you all for sincere and warm welcome already got my slippers on with a JD , but maybe I’m early with this ,a problem with my new Gretsch that I never had with my accoustic is that the first four frets tuning seems to be a tad sharp wel not a tad on the 6th string a lot sharp , any ideas what going on here my first reaction is that the neck needs filing down ,I have not done a set up yet or changed the strings Ill wait to when they arrive just a tad concerned maybe it’s an electric Gretsch thing
