I, for one, have gotten a lot of mileage out of those "Boomer Bends".

In decades of web searches that has never happened to me. As for the more innocent days online, never really was that way, but the darker aspects were not at the surface.

Actually, the modern search algorithms are better than what used to exist, in the ‘90s. I once tried searching for “muffler clamps”, back in the ‘90s, and by the fourth result I was seeing porn-site hits. Back then, they loaded the tags with any word they could think of which might be searched by their target audience, usually males, and the first gen’ search engines reported these as results. Search engines are much more sophisticated, these days.

In the case I just mentioned, I searched a term which apparently had a double meaning that I hadn’t thought of, and got results I wasn’t expecting.

  5. I don’t wanna know what “muffler clamps” might be. It doesn’t sound pleasant.

Search engines are quite the thing. Does anyone even use boolean searches these days?
I have a specialty browser that drills down & delivers intricate results, but is rarely used nowadays.

Part of the boolean searches may be neutered by duplicitous vendors.
Perform a search on some guitars & be directed to major retailers—who don’t actually sell that brand, but are willing to hijack your search to offer their “alternatives.”

No matter which search engine I use (DuckDuckGo, Google, Bing (yuck!)) the first several hits I get are different flavors of "We have the lowest prices on... <whatever I searched for, usually verbatim>" which is often something like "<celebrity name> imdb". Do they really have Charlize Theron and Brian Setzer for 30% off? I think not.

At least some of those are not search results but ads based on your search. For Google, the first couple "results" will say "Ad"; the real results are usually a couple items down. Of course, the people paying for search ads are also paying for search optimization so they are usually similar (Sweetwater, I'm looking at you!).
