Quilter Aviator Cub (US) speaker swap

Quilter has the Mach 3 head which combines the Aviator Cub and Aviator Cub UK features. But instead of 50 watts, it's 200 watts. I'd buy it, but that's too much power for my use. The closest thing to an Aviator Cub head is the Superblock US, with the same amp models. It's 25 watts that can...

Quilter Aviator Cub (US) speaker swap

Yes, can’t annoy the wife too much. It’s unhealthy for the guitar hobby. He he! I run the effects send from the Superblock UK into the effects return on the HX Stomp, then through an IR and one of the “dynamic” reverbs. That sounds amazing in headphones! I do the same thing with the...

Quilter Aviator Cub (US) speaker swap

I’m with you, I’d prefer either/or, not both speakers going at once. I’ll have to look into adding a powered speaker out. Intriguing suggestion. I haven’t looked to see if such a thing exists, but a device that does the opposite of a load box and takes a line level signal and without coloring...

Quilter Aviator Cub (US) speaker swap

I just got the Superblock UK and LOVE it! Hearing it through the Jensen P12Q in my Princeton Reverb inspired me to order a Deluxe Reverb cab and a Celestion Gold to put in it. I hope that works like I think it will. As you’re suggesting, I think the cabinet and speaker make a big difference...

Quilter Aviator Cub (US) speaker swap

I’ve always preferred alnico magnet pickups in guitars, and I thought it could be the same with guitar speakers. But I’m starting to think both the pickups and speakers are more of a personal brand preference, specifically for what sound that brand/maker is going for. Why do I not care for...

Quilter Aviator Cub (US) speaker swap

Just to clarify, the red backed speaker is the stock speaker. I took it out and put the Jensen C12N in, which I much prefer. Just noticed Quilter’s website says it’s a “special design” (there’s that term you mentioned) speaker by Eminence. Someone said it’s a neodymium magnet but it’s not...

Quilter Aviator Cub (US) speaker swap

I didn’t learn from the label where these are sourced. (EDIT: Quilter website says they’re from Eminence.) “Approved by Blaring Industries”, and “A Red Seal Speaker”? You said “special design”? How about “custom design”? He he! I think you’re absolutely right, about the lower quality or more...

Quilter Aviator Cub (US) speaker swap

I’ve had a Quilter Aviator Cub for a little over a year now. Here’s what I like about it: - Best sounding solid state amp I’ve tried. It’s not a tube amp, but for cleans, it sounds very good in it’s own right. - The three inputs named “Tweed”, “Blonde”, and “Black” all have unique...

    The rabbit hole

I'm an accountant, but a family man, so I have to keep my GAS a little more controlled than a $6K strat with $2k of "upgrades". I have about 10 what I'd call mid-range guitars. But my rabbit hole started with a Line 6 Variax JTV-59. So cool to change the body and pickups, even pots in the...

    Pick problems

I tried DAVA Control picks a couple decades ago and haven’t used anything else since. Excellent grip with the ridges and contour, but my favorite thing is the “multi-gauge” feature. If you want it to feel like a harder/thicker pick, you can “choke up” on it or grip it closer to the tip. Thinner...

    NGD: Gretsch G6128t-53 Vintage Select

This is my favorite guitar since I got mine a little over a year ago. Congratulations!

Gretsch get-togethers ever happen in Washington?

Hi All, I couldn’t help noticing a lot of members from the PNW and specifically western WA, and including Portland. If there’s an event around here I’d love to meet some of you, hear your stories, learn some cool things, and play together. And just to be clear, I’m fully aware that something...

    Greetings from the PNW!

I have an Electromatic G5657t which is the same body type as a Broadkaster Jr. Obviously it doesn’t have the same pickups as the one you played, but I love that body size for more of a rocker, so I put TV Jones Supertrons in it (photo has original pickups) and they are fantastic. Certainly they...

    Greetings from the PNW!

I’m just down the road from you. New member also. I’ve also not been satisfied with Les Pauls, though I love the look. Now I have a Vintage Select ‘53 Duo Jet I’m in love with. I think it’s really the Filtertrons and Dynasonics that sucked me in. And you’re right, a hollow body Gretsch has a...

So what is your single favorite (non-overdrive) pedal?

I second the motion. Some pedals sound best when used like a stereo studio effect for recording into a DAW, others are great in front of an amp. The Flint is fantastic in both scenarios. And it’s pretty cool to be able to plop one pedal in front of an amp and get some killer sounds. Given the...

    Hello from the UK

100% Agree! I put a Compton solid bridge on my G5420t, and a Tru-Arc on my G5657t and in both cases it did exactly what @wabash slim said. Rattles were gone and replaced by a cool resonance and better tone through the pickups.

    G2215 p90 bridge pickup?

I just got this guitar, and I've had several PRS SE models. I liked the PRS SE and think they're great quality for the price, but upgraded to an S2 Studio. I think you're right, the G2215 is on par with those guitars and less expensive. I still can't believe what a great guitar it is.

2x12 cab or 2x12 modeling amp & replace speakers?

That looks great! How do you like the TK Gremlin? Can you get nice clean tones with it?

2x12 cab or 2x12 modeling amp & replace speakers?

I'd guess that cabs are similar to guitars, in that certain things have a much bigger impact on the sound. For example, a bolt-on or set neck, all other things being equal, would be really hard to tell the difference in a blindfold test, but two sets of pickups in the same guitar is a much...

    Best clean amps

I know they may not be common or highly advertised, but I’ve been super impressed with Quilter products. I love the Quilter Aviator Cub, with Tweed, Blonde, and Black inputs. Each is different sounding and useful. Beautiful cleans after my speaker broke in. It was $600. My favorite amp for...

It all started with a Variax…

You know, sometimes I wish I had made the ProLine purchase a hollow body, because of the special feel and sound that a hollow body brings. Seems much easier to make a good chambered solid body. But I can’t find anything to complain about the G5420t. It really is fantastic.

What Advice Would You Give Your 16 Year Old Self?

I think I’m with you, seriously. All the tough stuff I went through made me who I am. “If I had a formula for bypassing trouble, I would not pass it around. Trouble creates a capacity to handle it.” Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr.

It all started with a Variax…

Since you have a blue G5420t you know it’s made in Korea, and the brown G5657t is made in China. Both are Electromatics in the $800 range. I enjoy playing both, but the G5420t does feel a little better built. The G5657t is nicer than most Epiphones semi-hollows I’ve picked up in stores, but...

It all started with a Variax…

Hi All, I’ve posted a few times here, but thought I’d introduce myself and how I came to be a Gretsch fan. The Variax HD was so cool being able to change virtual guitar bodies, pickups, even capacitors. But I found that I liked real magnetic pickups better than the Variax sounds, so I sold it...

2x12 cab or 2x12 modeling amp & replace speakers?

Has anyone tried using a Mesa Boogie Fillmore 2x12 cab with non-Mesa amps? Guessing the speakers probably don’t need to be swapped unless one is looking for a different sound.
