Hi, apologies for yet another 1st guitar question........I posted here a few years back for info but I never got the Gretsch! Back in the market again, almost offloaded my Yamaha SG200 (close but not sold yet!) and looking at "affordable" Gretsch. I play in an alt.country influenced band and have been listening to a bit of Son Volt recently!! I've seen a couple for sale locally but find it difficult to obtain the model numbers..I think they maybe a 5424 and a Electromatic Doublecut . I have attached some pics of the guitars [IMG] [IMG] and hope for some pointers. From reading online it appears the newer pickups (black coloured ones?) are more favoured. All help appreciated

The photos didn't show up for me. But, as a first Gretsch, you can't go wrong with a G5420T or G5422T! Both are amazing and come with some sweet Blacktop Filtertron pickups. Either of these would be great to see if you dig the Gretsch style. It only gets better from there!!

The two you pictured are small body, chambered style and the silver one catches my eye. IF you want a hollowbody go as b80 said with the 5420T or 5422T. You can find the latter used in the $450-550 range and the ones you pictured, depending on age, you can get for even less if you watch Reverb and Ebay. You can also go big or go home with the Pro series or Vintage depending on your budget. Looks like the guys in Son Volt are using solid bodies so one of the ones you pictured might do the trick.

These are nic entry-level guitars that wil do the job for you.
...until you got bitten by the G-bug and lust for the more expensive stuff.

The silver double cut is NOT chambered and they are pretty hefty. The mini humbuckers are not well liked among Gretsch aficionados.
The black one is chambered, has a master volume and decent pickups.

    You might look into a G 5230.
The body is chambered so you get good weight relief and good sustain.
it also has a Bigsby licensed Tremolo
and the Blacktop Filtertron pickups for that great Gretsch sound. Similarly priced to the ones you are looking at. I own it and love it.

so, it would appear that the Blacktop Filtertron pickups are the ones to have at this price range then?

Depending in what sound you want. I had both styles of these guitars in my hands (as the double cut versions). Playability is nice for me. Soundwise there was no big difference to me regarding they both have hs filters in them. So if you intend on changing pickups go with the one you like best. If you do not so, my suggestion is go with the black one.

Congrats on your first Gretsch. Welcome to the addiction.
Little known fact, if Jimmy Hendrix played a Gretsch, he'd still be alive today.

Looks nice, like the look of a 5420t but teally looking at a Tennesse rose. Let us know how it works out. I play similar music to tou by the sounds of it so i'll be interested to know.
