What's your hardware "finish" . . . i.e. plating . . .

Discussion in 'Technical Side of Things' started by Jena, May 9, 2019.

And what is your hardware base metal, is it different between different components (?) though all gold-plated or chromed, plated over some unknown alloy from China.(?)

ie all nickel-plated is not even the same nickel plating technique, let alone alloy base metal. Not a cosmetic stage presence question . . . but could be . . .

    chrome-plated, gold-plated, EF (nickel plating technique . . . , black finish on brass (?)

    Whaddya got metal-wise goin' on in that . . . that . . . 'lectric twanger . . . (?)

    sounds like a twisted sister . . .

    My preference is...
    - Chrome : durable and resistant to dirt and tarnishing.
    - Nickel or Maillechort : for the vintage look, but tend to tarnish.
    - polished Stainless Steel : typically for Tru-Arc bridges, the best against dirt and tarnishing .

I don't like gold : the worst about tarnishing, discolouration, look, cleaning, etc...

Depending on the style of guitar I like most finishes. No preference here.

I'm a fan of chrome or nickel, though the right guitar can look great with gold.

Depends on the guitar color maybe. I love the gold on my souped up orange 5420TG-59 with the brushed aluminum Bigsby.

Gold would be great if it would only last, if you have a gold Bigsby arm, you need buy a spare, so in seven months, you replace it.
I use polished brass Compton bridges because they look great, and can always be re-polished. The finish on stock gold bridges have only lasted me about three months. I thought that I was corrosive until reading this forum, and found out that the wear is typical. I guess misery loves company.

I have gold on a few guitars, and I like it when it looks "right." Everything else is chrome.

They don’t plate’m like they used to. Most Gold electro plated finishes nowadays dissolve when you oggle them from the wrong angle.
I bought a gold finished Schaller bridge for my first homebuild in the early ‘80s, played it daily for 20 years before hanging it up. The top of the saddles had worn but otherwise it was fine.

    Chrome or nickel for me.
Gold is only a couple of molecules thick, wears far too fast, and is far too expensive for as durable as it is.
Brass---I spent too much time in the service with a wad of Brasso in my hand to ever want anything in raw brass again.

I really like the "Industrial Velvet" finish that TV Jones offers on his Duo-Tron pickups. Titanium is a great look also IMO.

Reminds me very much of “raw nickel” which seems to be the latest thing in guitar finishes.

Here's some gold bling that I really think looks great. Otherwise I tend to like nickel.

Here's my custom-built Blue Belly La Strega with Chrome Bigsby, Titanium bridge, Ebony bridge base, black T-90s and black knobs/black tuners against a carbon-fiber background. I ordered it this way and I'm very happy with the result!

I'm happy with all the different plating that's offered.

Guess that I'm to the point in life that I'm not trying to keep them "looking like new." I play them and they all "age" in their own way.
