Of course early Beatles, Monkees (Last Train to Clarksville jangle fest) and Buffalo Springfield/Neil Young (pre-old black). Wooden Ships by CSNY I thought was quintessential Gretsch but turned our to be a Strat and a 335 ... boo.

I'm surprised there's only one mention of ACDC so far. Anyhoo - Gretsch doesn't only have one sound. We all know that. So maybe it's more a 'what is your favourite Gretsch sound?' type question. For me you can't get a better rhythm tone than Malcom Young in the Bon-Scott Era. But who am I to say? - I put P90s in mine lol.

The "huge" part may be the issue. I'm an apartment dweller currently and can't get my amp running hot enough to sag. I could get the breakup pretty well by running my Two-Tone with the volume up and master down, but the lower volume didn't sound big enough.

"That Great Gretsch Sound" covers a lot of area. Country, jazz, a wide range of rock, worship, blues and everything in between---sure can't narrow it down to one genre, much less one song.

Not the song, but the genre attracted me to Gretsch. A Jet was not surprisingly my first Gretsch.

I've always heard Townsend used a 6120 Chet on most of the "Who's Next" album. "Won't Be Fooled Again" would be my iconic Gretsch song.

    Very interesting discussion...

I "feel" the Gretsch sound" (even if I know that sometimes they are originally played with other guitars) when I listen to:

Duane Eddie - Rebel Rouser (sometimes was a Gretsch? sometimes was a Guild?)
Eddie Cochran - Summertime blues and more...
Brian Setzer - Stray cat strut and more...

    but also

Chris Isaak - Wicked game (I know it's a Fender, but it twangs Gretschly...)
Urge Overkill - Girl you'll be a woman soon (It's na Gretsch.!)

Great to see the ancient thread continuing!

The above Coal Men song and clip as posted months ago by neighborscomplaint was actually the reason for me to finally buy a G6122-1962 (surprisingly not ol ' George or even John Squire), the sheer range of timbre that thing produces being so breathtaking.

That all said, David Schelzel's G6118 (The Ocean Blue) going KERRRRRRANG w/a modulated reverb tail snagged me hard when I first heard this track in my first year of university though. That one opening chord was more than enough and still is the ideal Gretsch sound as heard in my little brain.

And as for ambient cleans, Don Perris' G6120 DC work all over Innocence Mission's Glow is so sublime, compressed and nicely reverberated. I may be almost 45 now, but when I "grow up" I'd love to play with Don's lovely arpeggio/bigsby touch on my Gretshes.
