The rules. Can’t be the backup band to a singer - buddy holly and the crickets

Must have music derived from post-1950 pre 1963

    Must be relatively well known.

Rules can be changed or added to.

    My initial nominations

    The cramps
    The stray cats
    Beatles pre 1964
    Rolling Stones pre 1964

    Your turn.

Oh, Paul Rogers' back up band? Actually, I think they might qualify. If so, then...

    Creedence Clearwater Revival (Fogerty)
Fleetwood Mac (best rhythm section ever, with various leads)
    Dire Straits (Knopfler)
    Little Feat (Lowell George)

Most bands have one or two featured musicians. Some others, like the Beatles, had all talented members. Buddy Holly needed the Crickets at the start. A band is a group effort, even if there is a featured performer or two. You can't do it alone (for the most part). Mediocre players will bring a great talent down, good backup is essential. Trying to single out one band to be the all time greatest is nearly impossible. The age spread of GT is too wide, tastes too varied. Everyone has a favorite, and thankfully there's a variety. It'd be boring if there was only one greatest band. YMMV.

    I don’t expect consensus. :)

But I’m going to knock out your four and bad company. All great rock bands. But not rock and roll bands.

You’re right re the featured player. However I had to narrow it down somewhere. ;)

    Maybe credence can stay in.

I gather you're referring to bands with an emphasis on the "Roll" in Rock n' Roll.
In which case CCR most definitely qualify. :)

I do love The Cramps and The Stones.

..... and Motorhead (yes, Motorhead were very much a Rock n' Roll band:cool:)

No because he was a featured performer not a band. One of the all time greats though.

he meets the criteria of the original post which doesn't say that it can't be an individual. I didn't mention the backup band and he Did play. maybe I can get another choice? lol

    Gotta be
    Stray Cats
Beatles or The Stones for me but not in any particular order

There were many great R & R songs out at various times over the years, but I think the Beatles and the Stones stayed the pace best to me

Without Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran, and Elvis......there would be no modern rock and roll as we know it. But further back are the Mississippi blues musicians....without them the 3 above would never had played and sang the way they do. All rock and roll pays homage to the Mississippi blues musicians who never really profited for their originality.
