Used 5120/5122

Discussion in 'Electromatic Gretsch Forum' started by Martin82, Jan 21, 2011.

  1. I am in the market for one of the above. I'm amazed at the scarcity of used ones on ebay and CL. What's the scoop - not many ever sold, or just very satisfied owners?

I'd have to say satisfied owners - the 5120 is one, if not thee best selling Gretsch of all time. I own both a 5120 and a 5122 (plus prolines) an I wouldn't part with either of them - you get a lot of guitar for your money - and best of all it's a Gretsch!!!

I'd keep lookin - they do turn up on ebay - just be patient.

In the mean time I'd recommend going to a good guitar store and tying both guitars new - so you'll have a better idea which suits you and which one you want to look out for.

I agree with the other comments, that the 512x series tend to be really great values, so people who buy them don't often put them up for sale. Their relative scarcity (as compared to, say, Squier Strats) means the show up less frequently on Craigslist.

Guitar Center has some on their used page, but no great deals. Most of them are running $500+ (without upgrades) and you might as well buy new for that price.

Here's one for $399 at Daddy's Junky Music
It's in their Springfield, MA store, but you could order it through a local shop and they'll ship it there for free.

The other thing I'd suggest doing is posting a "WTB" ad on this forum (and that other Gretsch forum, and perhaps on the Gear Page). If you want one in good condition, your best bet would be to find someone here who's upgrading from a 5120 to a Pro series.

I pick up my 5122 from the tech tomorrow (finally!) And, no, I'm not selling.
  6. Thanks all for your thoughtful replies. I was at my local GC today. They had four 5120 - two orange, one black and one walnut. I played all four - the last one I played (orange) played great and was in beautiful shape. It was on the upper part of the wall - out of reach of the casual shopper. Needless to say, I bought it. Took the foam pad out from under the bridge, checked intonation, changed the strings, and cleaned it up. Been playing it all evening. Today was a great day! Thanks again.

My awesome wife bought me a 5120 for our anniversary last year. I will NEVER part with that guitar. It plays like a dream and the sound is fantastic. I can make her sweet and angelic and with the turn of a knob a howling banshee!! Once you get one you will never let her go..:)

That's awesome and the fact that your wife bought it is even better. If my wife buys me a guitar, I'll never sell it.

That's a beauty for sure. I thought long and hard about an orange 5120; then I saw the 5127 - it was love at first sight. My wife helped me with mine out of her privately earned funds. Truly makes it special. Of course there was some guilt about running over my other guitar . . .

  17. I can't find the 5127 on the gretsch site. What is it? And, thanks
  18. Ouch! That had to hurt!
